Excerpt from The American Fox-Hound I have received of late years so many letter from parties who have come into possession of what has become known as the Trigg Dog, and from others desiring to secure them, that I have at last decided to write this book, intended as a brief history of my dogs and those of Messrs. Birdsong and Maupin from which the Trigg Dog originated. I shall be brief, confining myself to facts gathered from my personal acquaintance with both Mr. Birdsong and Mr. Maupin and their dogs, and from my numerous correspondence with these and other famous lovers of the chase, extending over thirty-five years. Some of the letters I have submitted herewith, believing they would be interesting and instructive to the new generation of sportsmen. I have the greatest confidence in the strains mentioned herein, but the different modes of hunting the fox in various sections require certain qualities to predominate; then, there are "as many men of many minds" as there are dogs of "high and low degree." I believe, after twenty-five years acquaintance with them, during which time I have tested their speed, nose, hunting qualities, etc., with representative dogs from nearly every famous pack of the country, and from the evidence of their worth as testified to by many letters from those who have run them after various game in other States, that I have a strain of dogs at least as good as those of their famous ancestors or any of to-day. I know from almost daily experience that I can run to earth or catch the red fox. To those of you who have my dogs, and to you who have other strains, we invite correspondence. I will be glad to exchange information, experiences, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Foxes, Foxhounds and Fox-Hunting Whether it be for better or worse we cannot tell, for hunting goes on despite the advent of the motor car, the rush of traffic, and the glass-like surface of the roads. It takes a lot to prevent a keen hunting man from following his favourite pursuit, and so despite the wire, the petrol fumes, and all the rest of it, big fields still forgather at every meet of hounds. Excerpt from A Century of English Fox-Hunting A preface must to a certain extent partake of the nature of an autobiography, and I fear that the majority of readers regard autobiographies with suspicion. Moreover, there are few books which require a preface to the first edition, though in subsequent editions it is only fair that the author should have an opportunity of making explanations in cases where he has been misunderstood. Nor, beyond acknowledging the kind help which I have received from friends and acquaintances, should I have made any prefatory remarks to the following pages, if it were not that I have been urgently persuaded to do so by those whose literary experience is far greater than my own. I have often heard it stated that the character of a book reflects the character of the author, and such undoubtedly must be the case when the book has any claim for originality. But in a work which only pretends to a moderate degree of research there can be little if any index to the character of the author, who accordingly should not be accused of personal vanity for writing a preface. Excerpt from Fox Hunting in America Fox hunting in America, as well as in Great Britain, had its beginning around the year 1700. In England long before that time, and indeed as early as 1611, the fox was hunted by the farmer and the petty squire, but the pursuit was really sport and was treated with great contempt by the sportsmen of those days, who held that stag hounds gave royal recreation and that the chase of the hare came next in importance. In America, however (and when I say America, I speak of the colonies of Virginia and Maryland for those early days), the sport of hunting any animal with hounds cannot very well have taken place until the end of the seventeenth century (1690) for the reason that the first settlements were upon the banks of streams, and for many years thereafter there were no fields over which hounds could run and, indeed, the settlers possessed neither hounds nor horses, even if the country had been adapted to hunting. The colony in Virginia, founded at Jamestown in 1607, was almost swept away by the great massacre in 1622, and for a year thereafter the colonists lived within stockades. never daring to wander beyond sight of a primitive fort. There is no record that fox hounds existed in the colony at that time and, indeed, the records of the Virginia Company from 1619 to 1624 contained no mention of foxes, or hounds, or of hunting. In Maryland, where the first settlement was founded at St. Mary's, near the present site of Annapolis, in 1634, the same state of affairs existed, and it seems, therefore, hardly probable that the statement made in Outing of October, 1897, by Mr. Hanson Hiss, in his very interesting article. "The Beginning of Fox Hunting in America," to the effect that in Queen Anne County the first fox hunt in America took place in the year 1650, is correct. Excerpt from Fox-Hunting: As Recorded by Raed Grandmother's fair, broad, pleasant countenance was in the door. To do her justice, she pretty nearly filled it, as I dimly perceived through frosty eye-lashes. Grandfather, with white hair, but blue eyes, came sturdily out to take the team. Kit led the way; and we all made a rush through to the sitting-room, where, in a fireplace that might have sufficed for Valhalla, there amed and roared a bonfire fit to celebrate the presidential election. We charged up to it; but the hot blast against our faces arrested us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
