The Sultan found her irresistible. The Chief Eunuch wanted to use her to his own ends. Jealous rivals plotted her demise. Can an innocent former convent girl survive in such a strange and dangerous world? In a tale deeply enmeshed in the histories of two of the world’s greatest empires, The French Sultana continues the true story of Aimée Dubucq de Rivery and her cousin Rose who were both destined to be queens...one beside the Emperor Napoleon and the other from behind the thrones of three consecutive sultans of the Ottoman Empire. The saga spans two continents from the decadent aristocratic courts of pre-revolutionary France, to the unimaginable opulence and deadly intrigues inside forbidden Turkish harem walls. Publisher's Note: This is an extraordinarily well-researched novel that is true to the period. As such, there is explicit sexual and violent content that, while typical to the era, is most appropriate for adult readers. The Veil and the Crown, in series order: The Stolen Girl The French Sultana “I felt as if the book had been written originally in French during the 18th century...as if the author had remembered and translated it into English, keeping the exact tone of the original account, with detailed description of the places, manners, clothing, tastes and smells transporting me into the actual moment and location of each scene, making me feel like I was immersed in a film instead of a book.” Fredric Lehrman, author of The Sacred Landscape

This is a rich and path-breaking comparative study of reading tastes in the final years of old regime Europe. Based on extensive research in the account books of the Swiss publishers, the Société Typographique de Neuchâtel (STN), and related archives, it charts the dissemination of literature and reading tastes across Europe in the years leading up to the French revolution. In the process, it recasts our understanding of late 18th-century print culture and the contours of the enlightenment. The fruit of a widely acclaimed five year database project, the STN database, it is also a story of pioneering efforts to apply the latest digital technology and GIS mapping techniques to traditional historical and bibliographic problems. Although written to serve as a standalone study, this book is ideally complemented by its companion volume, Mark Curran's The French Book Trade in Enlightenment Europe I: Selling Enlightenment, which offers a radical reinterpretation of the structure and practices of the European book trade. The STN database is now recognised as a cutting-edge digital project of global significance. Robert Darnton has called it "a prodigious accomplishment and a joy to use" while Jeremy Popkin adds, "No one working in the field of French Enlightenment studies ... can afford to ignore the rich mine of data that Simon Burrows and his collaborators have made accessible, in an eminently usable form, and the new possibilities it opens up for scholars." The French Book Trade in Enlightenment Europe I and II offer a roadmap of that data and what it can show us.

Excerpt from Second French Book The first french book was drawn up according to the best continental methods, of which the above quotation admirably expresses the aim. An eminent critic said of my first french book that it is arranged so that the Old-fashioned teacher can use it, and so that he will not be old-fashioned any longer when he has used it. The second french book is intended to follow on the same lines. Upon the practical suggestion of a colleague, I have fused the second and third french books into one: the first french book with its 30 'lessons' takes an average School one year and a half to get through; the second french book with its 40 'lessons' will pro bably occupy two years and a half if not three, especially as the Lessons are more condensed. It was thought preferable to have only two French Books 'for Preparatory Schools or the Junior forms of any schools. I have endeavoured to make this second french book as self-contained and independent of the first as possible. I have given a little less guidance to the teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. This volume is a ground-breaking contribution to enlightenment studies and the international and cross-cultural history of print. The result of a five year research project, the volume traces the output and dissemination of books and how reading tastes changed in the years 1769-1794. Mapping the book trade of the Société Typographique de Neuchâtel (STN), a Swiss publisher-wholesaler which operated throughout Europe, the authors reconstruct the cosmopolitan elite culture of the later enlightenment, incorporating many engaging case studies. The STN's archives are uniquely rich in both detail and range, and while these archives have long attracted book historians (notably Robert Darnton, a leading scholar of the Enlightenment), existing work is fragmentary and limited in scope. By means of comparative study, the author considers the entire book market across Europe, making local, regional and chronological nuances, based on advanced taxonomies of subject content, author information, markers of illegality and much more. This volume is, in short, the most diverse and detailed study of the late 18th-century book trade yet, while offering fresh insights into the enlightenment.

FRENCH SENTENCES Vol.2: English & French THIS EDITION: The dual-language text has been arranged into sentences for quick and easy cross-referencing. The text can be used on its own. However, the content is ideal for reinforcing grammar, and as a precursor to more advanced bilingual editions. This digital edition contains the content in ‘English to French’ and ‘French to English’ formats. Once a student has studied the basics, a suitable book about basic grammar is helpful. The suggestion is that it be studied more with the intent of recognition and understanding, rather than memorising and obsessive rote learning. Go through as much of the book you feel you can digest — maybe even the whole book — skipping over what is not easily understood. Then, read through a portion of text in this book, looking for examples of what you have picked up (or gleaned) in your hopefully not so arduous study of grammar. Even repeatedly seeing a word that you remember seeing listed as a ‘subject pronoun’ or a ‘third person plural’ verb of some sort is a great help. Then, depending on your inclination, return to the grammar book (or your basic French book), or move on to lengthier bilingual text — like in 2Language Books texts containing news or stories, for example —, or find some suitable French text: a simple novel, a French news website, etc. Grammar books will likely have some verb charts. However, there are currently good on-line resources that go further — dictionaries with a verb conjugation ‘search’ option. Many basic language books offer some form of audio support. Internet services — primarily news based radio stations — offer podcasts. Audio from television is an additional resource, and can be formatted for use on various digital platforms. However, if audio is an important component of your interest in languages, electronic devices that support quality text-to-speech (TTS) will likely be appealing. With a library card, TTS technology (in a device that supports the relevant content), and the above mentioned resources, an entire language learning system is available for not much more than a cup of coffee! There is no substantial financial outlay to get you started. Furthermore, there are no additional ongoing fees (and updates), and there are no expiry dates on ‘premium’ content and resources.
