In all of the dusty volumes of Civil War memoirs that no one reads anymore, once in a while we come across one such as this. Written by a man with literary aspirations from a regiment of like-minded soldiers, Albert Marshall’s use of the pen produced more eloquence than did that of many of his contemporaries. He left one of the most compelling accounts of the siege of Vicksburg from a private soldier's point of view. He also wrote of service in Texas, which is rare among Civil War memoirs. Eloquent, funny, poignant, and immensely satisfying, Marshall's memoir from his journal is one of the best of the genre. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers, tablets, and smartphones. Excerpt from Army Life: From a Soldier's Journal If my comrades of the great Union army, when reading these reminiscences are carried back, in mem ory, to the old camp fires and army scenes - if their friends in reading the story can, in imagination, see what the soldiers endured and what they accomplished, my object is attained. I have made no attempt to write a war, nor even a regimental history; but this little book is submitted for simply what it claims to be - A picture OF A private soldier's army life. This is one of the more popular memoirs written by a soldier during the Civil War. From the preface: "When I began writing these reminiscences it did not occur to me that anything in the nature of a preface was necessary. It was thought that the dedication to my son Jerry contained sufficient explanation. But I have now finished writing these recollections, and in view of all that they set forth, I believe that a few brief prefatory remarks may now be appropriate. In the first place it will be said that when I began the work it was only to gratify my son, and without any thought or expectation that it would ever be published. I don't know yet that such will be done, but it may happen. The thought occurred to me after I had written some part of it, and it is possible that about at that point some change began to take place in the style, and phraseology, and which perhaps may be observed. So much for that. Next I will say that all statements of fact herein made, based upon my own knowledge, can be relied on as absolutely true. My mother most carefully preserved the letters I wrote home from the army to her and to my father. She died on February 6, 1894, and thereafter my father (who survived her only about three years) gave back to me these old letters. In writing to my parents I wrote, as a rule, a letter every week when the opportunity was afforded, and now in this undertaking with these letters before me it was easy to follow the regiment every mile of its way from Camp Carrollton in January, 1862, to Camp Butler, in September, 1865. Furthermore, on June 1, 1863, at Memphis, Tennessee, as we passed through there on our way to join Grant's army at Vicksburg, I bought a little blank book about four inches long, three inches wide, and half an inch thick. From that time until we were mustered out, I kept a sort of very brief diary in this little book, and have it yet. The old letters and this book have been invaluable to me in writing my recollections, and having been written at or near the time of the happening of the events they mention, can be relied on as accurate and truthful. Though I attained the rank of a commissioned officer while in the service, yet that did not occur until near the end of my time, and after the war was over. So it is submitted that the title given these sketches, "The Story of a Common Soldier," is warranted by the facts. If this manuscript should ever be published, it will go to the world without any apology or commendation from me whatever. It is, though, only fair to say that I make no pretensions to being a "literary" man. This is simply the story of a common soldier who served in the army during the great war, and who faithfully tried to do his duty."

"Reconciliation in Action" gives a synoptic view of her intense belief of sanctity toward humanity in her written thoughts on person-to-person interactions. Sadie Williams believes that the realities of the journey through life should be treated with the best possible commonsense attitude in order to maintain a well balanced focus toward a positive direction. She believes that individuals should accept accountability of their thought process that reflects behavioral conduct. Sadie believes that personal conduct is a state of mind that can revel itself in spoken words of harmonious, or contemptuous behavior. She refers to the thought process as being very individually unique within itself, therefore the individual needs to be first, "true to self", in order to accept reality as truth. Sadie applauds respect in dealing with issues of differences or indifference that relates to settling disputes: because there are always two sides to a story that needs to be heard and given its due rewards. Her idea is that it is good for the individual to have and maintain a peaceful mindset that is good for both the mind as well as physical well-being. "Reconciliation in Action" is a book packed with great food-for-thoughts-ideas that is designed to have a delightful impact on its readers.

Two months after the attack at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, 18-year-old George W. Gardner enlisted in the 35th Regiment New York State Volunteers. A few months after that, his father, Ebenezer, enlisted in the same regiment. What they did not know was what awaited them: a Union Army of the Potomac struggling to defend its capitol, suffering defeat and losses at the hands of a well-trained rebel Confederate Army. Year 1862 would find the father and son and their comrades on their heels, and in retreat most of the time. It would take them to some of the Civil War's most storied and bloodiest battles; Antietam, Bull Run, Fredericksburg, South Mountain - and valiantly protecting Washington's own doorstep. Corporal Gardner's efficient, curt style of writing, documenting his duties during those battles, is enhanced by added historical information in the footnotes. Relevant Civil War photos from the Library of Congress, George Gardner's personal post-war documents and photos, and photographs of excavated relics from the areas mentioned in the diary, give this book a complete "life story" feel.
