For the casual film fan, Henry Hathaway is not a household name. But in a career that spanned five decades, Hathaway directed an impressive number of films and guided many actors and actresses to some their most acclaimed performances. He also helped launch the Hollywood careers of numerous actors such as Randolph Scott, Lee Marvin, Karl Malden, and Charles Bronson. His work on Niagara established Marilyn Monroe as a major star. Hathaway also guided John Wayne to his Academy Award-winning performance in the original version of True Grit. In Henry Hathaway: The Lives of a Hollywood Director, Harold N. Pomainville looks at the life and work of this Hollywood maverick. The author charts Hathaway’s career from his first low budget Western in the early 1930s through his last film in 1974. In between, he focuses his attention of the films that brought the director acclaim, including The Lives of Bengal Lancer (1935)—for which Hathaway received an Oscar nomination—noir thrillers The House on 92nd Street and Kiss of Death, and his documentary-like production of Call Northside 777 with Jimmy Stewart. In this book, the author captures Hathaway’s extroverted personality and keen intellect. He befriended some of the best known celebrities of his generationand was known for his loyalty, generosity, and integrity. He was also notorious in Hollywood for his powerful ego, explosive temper, and his dictatorial style on the set. Henry Hathaway: The Lives of a Hollywood Director is a must-read for anyone interested in the enduring work of this unheralded, but no-less-noteworthy, master of American cinema.

Inside the pages of this book you will discover a captivating man's story of life growing up poor in West Virginia. The son of a coal miner, drifting after graduation trying to find his way in the world, moving with his family back to the State of Texas and leaving behind the girl he planned to marry. Life for him was tough and only one could imagine how in the world one person could encounter the difficulties that seemed to follow him wherever he went. The breakup of his first love, the ended romance in Texas, he could take no more, leading him to join the Marines for a life of hell that would cause the injuries that he lives with today. Returning home, drifting and trying to become successful in life, using his fist as an amateur boxer, managing to win the West Texas Golden Gloves Championship. Beating the odds was nothing for this man because he fought them his entire life. Something you only see in movies? No, not this man. They say he has lived the life of twenty men. From being poor to working his way up in the business world of sales he would own and operate several retail businesses that would make him a millionaire. This sounds pretty good until you get to the part that he loses it all. Pain and hunger, love and divorces, poor then wealthy, romance and heartache, sexual assaults and murder, custody battles that granted him full custody of two children and co-custody of one...enough, not a chance the story has just begun. What you read in this book you will not believe happened, but it did! This is just a sample of this one man's life. Readers say, "It's addictive." Once you start reading this unbelievable story you can't put it down. Step into this man's life as he tells you in his words the life as he knows only to be, "From Hell to Heaven to Hell."

Maggie Quinn, girl reporter. Honors student, newspaper staffer, yearbook photographer. Six weeks from graduation and all she wants to do is get out of Avalon High in one piece. A sensible nerd would have kept her head down, done her drive-by photo shoot of the prom, and continued the countdown to Deploma Day. But fate seems to have different plans for Maggie. High school may be a natural breeding ground for evil, but the scent of fire and brimstone is still a little out of the ordinary. It's the distinct smell of sulfur that makes Maggie suspect that something's a bit off. And when real Twilight Zone stuff starts happening to the school's ruling clique—the athletic elite and the head cheerleader and her minions, all of whom happen to be named Jessica—Maggie realizes it's up to her to get in touch with her inner Nancy Drew and ferret out who unleashed the ancient evil before all hell breaks loose. Maggie has always suspected that prom is the work of the devil, but it looks like her attendance will be mandatory. Sometimes a girl's got to do some pretty undesirable things if she wants to save her town from soul-crushing demons from hell. And the cheerleading squad. "Dripping with wit on nearly every page."-School Library Journal "Smart (and smart-ass)."-KLIATT "There is a lot to like in this story that takes on magic, romance, and even clique politics."-Publisher's Weekly "Fans of shows like Charmed and Buffy the Vampire Slayer will relish the unflappable, edgy humor Maggie brings to her fight against supernatural evil."-The Horn Book Magazine "Sharp, sarcastic wit...[This book] will appeal to supernatural fans of Meg Cabot's Mediator series."-VOYA

From Hell to Haven; Darkness to light; Negativity to Positivity; and from Cradle to Salvation, Life Journey is principally my life journey from South Sudan to Kenya and ultimately to the United States, where I was able to go to college and, in the process, was enlightened and brought into union with God. In other words, it’s the journey from that sense of being lost in spirit as a result of the initial separation from God in the garden, so to speak, two thousand years ago. After many years of having been dead in the spirit and doing what the dead in spirit do, which is being in the state of drunkenness most of the time or venturing in the ways of fools, I found God within who helped me understand what life is all about. Many years ago in South Sudan, I never would have imagined that this divine revelation would ever happen to me. I never knew that when I would come to the United States, God would show himself to me and change my life and bestow me with the gift of the Holy Spirit. I never knew even coming to the United States, let alone the revelation of himself to me. Finally, his love for us—his love for us is ever lasting and enduring. God’s love for us is inseparable. He loves us more, and he wants us to love each other in return. Love being the final stage in life, God wants to teach us to love one another just like he loved us and freed us from the grip of sins and death and bathed us with his love. This is the love of God for me. The manifestation of his love is the basis for this book.
