In Subversive Spirituality Peterson has gathered together a host of writings penned over the past twenty-five years that reflect on the overlooked facets of the spiritual life. Comprising occasional pieces, short biblical studies, poetry, pastoral readings, and interviews, this work captures the epiphanies of life with the pleasing pastoral style and inspiring depth of insight for which Peterson is well known. Peterson describes his book this way: "This gathering of articles and essays, poems and conversations, is a kind of kitchen midden of my noticings of the obvious in the course of living out the Christian life in the vocational context of pastor, writer, and professor. The randomness and repetitions and false starts are rough edges that I am leaving as is in the interests of honesty. Spirituality is not, by and large, smooth. I do hope, however, that these pieces will be found to be freshly phrased".

Spirituality is both a personal and a shared experience; it is private and communal. The old religious dogmas, hierarchies, creeds, and antiquated vocabularies are increasingly irrelevant to 21st century seekers of truth; but the shared spiritual journey still has value. Can we move beyond the irrelevance of outmoded religion and still form spiritual communities, embrace life enhancing rituals, enjoy sacred stories, and ask honest questions that may not have preapproved answers? One liberal minister thinks that such spiritual communities are possible and needed and he has devoted his life to creating such communities. A humanistic spirituality can still embrace mystery and wonder, hope and peace, possibilities and wisdom, and as we offer such spirituality, a new generation may discover that houses of worship can still have meaning.

All my books can be read online free at wayneodonnell.com. “Freely you have received, freely give” (Mt. 10:8). The salvation God provided to us in Jesus (Yeshua in Hebrew, which means ‘salvation’), is comprised of both spiritual and physical parts. Justification and sanctification are spiritual; but glorification, like also resurrection, is physical. God’s workings with Israel are also in the physical realm, the realm where genealogies matter. “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham,” Mt. 1:1. So much misinterpretation of scripture, like that of Reformed Theology, is due to their felt need to leave the principle of literal interpretation of scripture because of their failure to differentiate between things like personal spiritual salvation and national physical salvation. The Bible often focuses on spiritual and physical salvation in separate books and passages. For example, Romans 1-8a, Romans 12-16, and 1 John, focus on spiritual salvation. Ezekiel 40-48, the Gospel of Matthew, and Romans 8b-11, focus on physical salvation. Expository surveys of these two sets of passages comprise the content of this book. Physical Salvation: “The glory of Jehovah came into the temple, ... and He said, ... ‘This is the place of My throne and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel forever,’” Ezekiel 43:4-7. Spiritual Salvation: “Except a man be born again, he can’t see the kingdom of God,” John 3:3. Spiritual Salvation: “Having been justified by faith, we have had our access ... into this grace wherein we stand;” Physical Salvation: “and rejoice in hope of the glory of God,” Romans 5:1-2.

Rays of Living Light on the One Way of Salvation is about the importance of believers' faith in God and how we can bring ourselves closer to the Lord. This is a great manual to better understand Mormonism and reflect on it as a productive and rich religion. Excerpt: "As there is but one Supreme God, there can be but one true religion. That religion must be of divine origin. It must come from God to man. Religions invented by men would necessarily vary. Man cannot by his searching find out God..."

Why has religion persisted across the course of human history? Secularists have predicted the end of faith for a long time, but religions continue to attract followers. Meanwhile, scholars of religion have expanded their field to such an extent that we lack a basic framework for making sense of the chaos of religious phenomena. To remedy this state of affairs, Martin Riesebrodt here undertakes a task that is at once simple and monumental: to define, understand, and explain religion as a universal concept. Instead of propounding abstract theories, Riesebrodt concentrates on the concrete realities of worship, examining religious holidays, conversion stories, prophetic visions, and life-cycle events. In analyzing these practices, his scope is appropriately broad, taking into consideration traditions in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Daoism, and Shinto. Ultimately, Riesebrodt argues, all religions promise to avert misfortune, help their followers manage crises, and bring both temporary blessings and eternal salvation. And, as The Promise of Salvation makes clear through abundant empirical evidence, religion will not disappear as long as these promises continue to help people cope with life.
