The house overlooks Kaneohe Naval Air Station. Their attention was caught by flames and smoke billowing from the air base. They soon learned that it had been attacked by Japanese planes. Moments later, as they absorbed the shock of that news, Anne looked out the window and saw the second wave of Japanese planes flying by at eye level, unleashing more bombs on the air base. A plane could be seen crashing into the bay.The hours following the attack were filled with panic, rumors of invasion, blackouts, and emergency services fighting fires and tending to the dead and wounded.Against this backdrop of fear and terror, one of the Anne's first concerns was for her son Peter, a student at faraway University of Washington. While all these events were fresh in her mind, she immediately wrote him a detailed letter, describing the horror of the attacks and reassuring him that she and the rest of the family were okay.Anne continue to write to Peter every other day or so through the rest of December. In her letters she hopes that eventually the mail will reach him and entreats him to write soon and let them know that he is okay.These contemporary letters that begin on "the day that will live in infamy" are poignant and moving. In a few pages Anne conveys her fears, her mother's love, and a resolution to bear up under "the trying days ahead of us."For those of us who weren't yet alive in 1941 or for those who lived on the mainland thousands of miles away, Anne's letters bring alive emotions and fears of those who experienced the attack as no film or book could do.Peter kept the letters and eventually they were brought back to Hawai'i put into storage. Kolodziej studies three significant academic musical figures to weave a narrative that not only details the role musical studies played in the development of Southern Methodist University but also relates a history of church music and pipe organs in Dallas, Texas. Bertha Stevens Cassidy (1876–1959), the first organ professor and the only woman on the faculty of the new university, established herself as a leader and veritable dean of the church music community, managing a career of significant performances and teaching. Her student and protégé, Dora Poteet Barclay (1903–1961), a Waco native, exhibited such musical potential that she was hired by SMU the day after her graduation. Taking over the organ program upon Cassidy’s retirement, Barclay broadened the pedagogical horizons for her students. The great French composer Marcel Dupré, with whom she briefly studied, extolled Barclay’s talents: “She is my best American student!” Many of her own students achieved great professional heights as performers and church musicians. With the hiring of Robert Theodore Anderson (1934–2009), SMU solidified its reputation as a school able to provide excellence not only in performance training but also in scholarship. A Chicago native who studied in New York and in Germany, Anderson represented a new, modern outlook to teaching and performance. He was intellectually able to bridge the gap between the theologians of the Methodist seminary and the performers at the Meadows School of the Arts. Through his example and guidance, organists were taught to think critically, whether about music or any other subject, and to attain excellence in the craft of organ performance. During the 1980s Anderson consulted with the Dallas Symphony to prepare for the installation of an organ in the new Meyerson Symphony Center, an organ that would influence concert hall instruments in subsequent decades. These three pedagogues played important roles in the development of the musical curriculum as well as the building of important organs on the SMU campus and around the city, each in their own ways nurturing the practice of sacred music in North Texas.

HELL ON A HILL TOP-for four months in 1970, Hell raged on the hill tops of Ripcord, 805, 902 and 1000, all just east of the A Shau Valley. HELL ON A HILL TOP Instead of backing away from the fight, the North Vietnamese mortar, recoilless rifle, heavy machine gun, sapper and regular infantry attacks increased. The last offensive around Ripcord was starting to look like the last stand. Unwilling to keep American soldiers at high risk at this stage of the war; Ripcord was evacuated on 23 July. The battle went unnoticed for 30 years until Keith Nolan's book, RIPCORD, was published. As powerful and gripping as was the story of great leadership and courageous fighting by our soldiers, the magnitude of the enemy force still remained unknown. The author, the 3rd Brigade commander during the siege and evacuation, made trips to Vietnam in 2001 and 2004 and interviewed the 324B Division Commander whose first-ever division sole mission, was to destroy Firebase Ripcord. The full story is now told.
