A full-scale helicopter rotor test was conducted in the NASA Ames 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnel with a four-bladed S-76 rotor system. Rotor performance and loads data were obtained over a wide range of rotor shaft angles-of-attack and thrust conditions at tunnel speeds ranging from 0 to 100 kt. The primary objectives of this test were (1) to acquire forward flight rotor performance and loads data for comparison with analytical results; (2) to acquire S-76 forward flight rotor performance data in the 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnel to compare with existing full-scale 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel test data that were acquired in 1977; (3) to evaluate the acoustic capability of the 80- by 120- Foot Wind Tunnel for acquiring blade vortex interaction (BVI) noise in the low speed range and compare BVI noise with in-flight test data; and (4) to evaluate the capability of the 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnel test section as a hover facility. The secondary objectives were (1) to evaluate rotor inflow and wake effects (variations in tunnel speed, shaft angle, and thrust condition) on wind tunnel test section wall and floor pressures; (2) to establish the criteria for the definition of flow breakdown (condition where wall corrections are no longer valid) for this size rotor and wind tunnel cross-sectional area; and (3) to evaluate the wide-field shadowgraph technique for visualizing full-scale rotor wakes. Detailed dynamic loads data are divided into two sections; thrust sweep data and speed sweep data. Data for both forward flight thrust sweep conditions and speed sweep conditions with minimized flapping trim are presented in tabulated form in this appendix. Thrust sweep data runs are grouped in terms of increasing rotor advance ratio and shaft angle-of-attack, os. Speed sweep data runs are grouped in terms of increasing shaft angle-of-attack, a5, and thrust condition. A full-scale four-bladed UH-60 rotor system was tested in the NASA Ames 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnel. A quality data set at low forward speed, 0 to 80 knots, has been obtained to support future rotor developments and analysis improvements. To evaluate the NASA Ames 80- by 120- Foot Wind Tunnel as a hover testing facility, rotor performance data were compared with predictions, UH-60 aircraft flight test data, and UH-60 model-scale data from other test facilities. Results indicate that valid hover data for this size rotor can be obtained from this facility at low to medium thrust conditions. Comparisons with flight test and model-scale data demonstrate the variability between existing data sets. Predictions show good agreement with full-scale data. To evaluate the analytical modeling in the 0 to 80 knot speed range, forward flight rotor performance data were acquired and compared with predictions. Comparisons were also made with existing model-scale and flight test data. Power calculations show fair to good agreement with full-scale wind tunnel data at advance ratios between 0.10 to 0.19 and poor agreement at advance ratios below 0.10. Comparisons with flight test and model-scale data show good agreement at all advance ratios tested. Propulsive force calculations show good correlation with full-scale wind tunnel data at advance ratios of 0.10 to 0.19.

The effects of open loop higher harmonic control (HHC) on rotor hub loads, performance, and push rod loads of a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter rotor at high airspeeds (up to 200 knots) and moderate lift (10,000 lbs) were studied analytically. The analysis was performed as part of a wind tunnel pre-test prediction and preparation procedure, as well as to provide analytical results for post-test correlation efforts. The test associated with this study is to be concluded in the 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel of the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC) at the NASA Ames Research Center. The results from this analytical study show that benefits from HHC can be achieved at high airspeeds.
