Fusion bonding is one of the three methods available for joining composite and dissimilar materials. While the other two, mechanical fastening and adhesion bonding, have been the subject of wide coverage both in textbooks and monographs, fusion bonding is covered here substantially for the first time. Fusion bonding offers a number of advantages over traditional joining techniques and it is anticipated that its use will increase dramatically in the future because of the rise in the use of thermoplastic matrix composites and the growing necessity for recyclability of engineering assemblies. Fusion Bonding of Polymer Composites provides an in-depth understanding of the physical mechanisms involved in the fusion bonding process, covering such topics as: - heat transfer in fusion bonding; - modelling thermal degradation; - consolidation mechanisms; - crystallisation kinetics; - processing-microstructure-property relationship; - full-scale fusion bonding; - fusion bonding of thermosetting composite/thermoplastic composite and metal/thermoplastic joints. The book focuses on one practical case study using the resistance welding process. This example exposes the reader to the development of processing windows for a novel manufacturing process including the use of experimental test programmes and modelling strategies.

This Special Issue reprint focuses on the latest advances and development of fusion bonding/welding of polymer composites. It contains research articles addressing materials, processing, modeling, monitoring, or performance issues with experimental or numerical approaches. Whatever the process, e.g., resistance, induction, ultrasonic, laser or conduction welding, or 3D printing using fused deposition modeling, one of the challenges is to master the interfacial phenomena, structure, and quality in the assembly area (welds), which is rather tricky due to the presence of the reinforcement fibers. Additionally, it is of paramount importance to develop reliable predictive process simulation software and monitor and control the process parameters in situ.

The efficiency of the welded joints is quantified by comparing test results to compression molded lap shear strength. A rapid increase in strength that asymptotically approaches the compression molded baseline is measured. In general, resistance welded APC-2 with PEEK film requires longer process times, with fiber motion occurring at the joint, to achieve a maximum lap shear strength of 44.8±7.6 MPa. The APC-2/PEI resistance welded specimens achieved a maximum strength of 35.9±1.0 Mpa in shorter time with no fiber motion. The baseline for the APC-2/PEI was determined from isothermal processing (1200 sec at 293°C) to be 43.6±3.8 MPa."

Polymer matrix composites are finding increasing number of applications due to their high weight-saving potential as well as unique characteristics, such as high strength-to-density ratio, fatigue resistance, high damping factor, and freedom from corrosion. While many textbooks are available on the mechanics of polymer matrix composites, few cover their processing. Processing of Polymer Matrix Composites fills this gap. The book focuses on the major manufacturing processes used for polymer matrix composites and describes process details, process parameters and their effects on properties and process-induced defects, and analytical and experimental methods used for understanding process conditions. The book describes fibers, thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers, and interface characteristics that are important from the standpoint of both design and processing. It also emphasizes the applications of process fundamentals for both continuous fiber and short fiber polymer matrix composites. In addition the book considers quality inspection methods, tooling, and manufacturing costs and environmental and safety issues.

Strengthening and Joining by Plastic Deformation

Strengthening and Joining by Plastic Deformation

This book focuses on strengthening and joining materials by means of plastic deformation, gathering extended research papers presented at the AIMTDR 2016 conference. Plastic deformation is used in materials processing to improve the strength of the material. For example, the rod/screw used to connect the cooker handle to the main body has to be strong and sustainable; such rods can be strengthened by plastic deformation (using multi-stage forming operations etc.). Similarly, joining by means of plastic deformation is highly valuable since it avoids the material and environmental degradation often caused by fusion welding processes. The book discusses various processing techniques in which plastic deformation is used to strengthen materials – e.g. in equal channel angular extrusion, autofrettage etc., or to join materials without melting them – e.g. in friction stir processing, riveting etc. Offering an extensive guide, the book includes chapters on roll bonding, equal channel angular pressing, autofrettage, friction stir processing/welding, magnetic pulse welding, and riveting – processes used to strengthen and join a variety of materials for lightweight applications and sustainable manufacturing. The contents of this book will be useful to researchers and practitioners alike.
