Excerpt from Galvanic Batteries: Their Theory, Construction and Use, Comprising Primary Single and Double Fluid Cells, Secondary and Gas Batteries Although the dynamo has ousted the battery from its position as chief generator of current electricity, there still remains a large field in which the use of the dynamo is inadmissible. Even when the dynamo is applicable, cases may occur wherein the employment of a battery is preferable, owing either to local circumstances, or to considerations of the time for which the current is required. Letters innumerable have been received from correspondents respecting the suitability of the many batteries which have been brought before the public, since the original discoveries of Galvani and Volta, for special purposes. The following chapters embody the substance of the replies to these queries; and the result is a work, in which a description of every known battery of any practical use is given; along with data as to E.M.F., internal resistance, and adaptability to particular requirements.
