"A biography of the extraordinary Nellie Cashman, a well-loved miner, entrepreneur and philanthropist who lived and worked in the roughest boomtowns of the West in the late-nineteenth century. At a time when well-bred women wore tight corsets and entertained each other at tea, Nellie Cashman (1845-1925) was trekking for hundreds of miles through blizzard conditions to deliver food and supplies to trapped miners in northern BC. An Irish immigrant, Cashman travelled from Boston to San Francisco in search of opportunity. She followed the mining boomtowns, all the way from California to northern BC, and Arizona to Alaska opening up restaurants and boarding houses, and staking mining claims. She was friends with the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday during her years in Tombstone, and was known among them for her kind heartedness and charitable acts. This biography is a fresh look at the fascinating life of an under-appreciated historical character."--

What stripped crews from 300 ships in San Francisco Bay? What stampeded the world's hungry men into icy creeks and untamed women to the Barbary Coast's gin mills and bordellos? How could a ditch digger make $3,000 in a day? What made California into a state in the time it took to ready a hog for market? Gold! "Stolen, borrowed, squandered, doled - the price of many a crime untold." -- "Wiles and Brown bring together the notable, infamous and newsworthy of the California Gold Rush and the nation's Capitol prior to the dark days that were on our country's horizon. Extensive research and the rich material presented have produced a real page-turner. Their Reference Notes are quick and easy to use to view sources or read further." Review by Maria E. Though San Francisco is frenzied and full of wild and dangerous men, Tory finds freedom and friendship there. Until one day, when Father is in the gold fields, her younger brother, Jacob, is kidnapped. And so Tory is spurred on a treacherous search for him in Rotten Row, a part of San Francisco Bay crowded with hundreds of abandoned ships. At Missouri House, a stagecoach stop in the goldfields of the Sierra Nevada, Ida Hatfield and her mother Molly are surrounded by danger as Yankees, Rebels, and outlaws vie to possess the glittering treasure of the Northern Mines. In nearby Nevada City, Will Stafford, a young Virginian attorney, finds California becoming as dear to his heart as his Southern homeland. As the War of Rebellion rages on, his loves and loyalties are put to the ultimate test. Nevada City, the Queen of the Northern Mines, was a vibrant community in the 1860's. The story's characters, real and fictional, come from all over the globe. In addition to the central theme of warring Americans, the book tells of Ah Tie, a Chinese mine owner who is denied justice for his two murdered guards; of Peter Kessel, an Austrian musician and absconded revolutionary, who finds an improbable bride in the American wilderness; and of Nutim, a Maidu orphan, who plots revenge against the white "ghost people" who are destroying his tribe. This monster Rock-n-Roll survey focuses on the songs and the vibrant personalities who create them, for college audiences and the general public. Dean published the world's first history of Rock in 1966. Here, in his ebullient style, he buzzes through piles of musical singles from the whole last half century, describing what is fun about each major and minor hit, pointing out what elements were exciting or new or significant in the development of musical styles. He relates some tantalizing tidbits about the earlier musical heritage that artists have drawn upon in crafting ever more amazing evolutions of rock music. This snappy, witty and informative album has universal appeal, doubling as a coffee-table trivia treasure and a college-level popular music history text. It includes hundreds of photos, chapter questions, and an extensive index. Reader-friendly and informationally complete, it covers soft rock, heavy metal, rhythm & blues, country rock and classic oldies, all with tender loving care, for the specialist and casual listener alike. Its mini-portraits of the artists who move so many hearts (and feet), the photos and the insightful sound bites get to the essence of each song and each musician's contribution to the music of our age. The single-song focus makes the book unique. It's a playlist for R'n'R professors and the general public, written with a collegiate vocabulary, tight organization and a respect for all. "Hearing Elvis for the first time was like busting out of jail." - Bob Dylan That being said, no one is being incited, here, to bust out of jail or to emulate the quixotic habits of rock stars. "There's nothing in here to hide from the kids, the clergy or grandma." Gold Rush can be used as a university or community college text, but most people will grab it for the sheer pleasure of reading about everyone's favorites. Great gift for Rock enthusiasts. Gold Rush is the first book of its kind to feature a celebration of the great single songs of the rock era and beyond. Gold Rush takes thousands of songs, spanning three centuries, and brings them back uniquely as if they came out just yesterday. Gold Rush unites the Anglo-American and later worldwide spirit of Rock and Roll in a tapestry of interconnected melodies and adventures. As Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide helps you select videos at Blockbuster, so Gold Rush is a powerful playlist for your music collection, with many new and fascinating photos of favorite stars. Gold Rush explains the most important stories behind the songs you picked to be played, the songs that 'went gold,' from the 1897 Alaska/Klondike Gold Rush to the #1 songs of today and beyond.

The story is written as a diary by a young woman, Dorothy, at the age of twenty-one, recounting her adventures from seventeen, of living in Baltimore just before gold was discovered in California. She recounts the sudden death of her mother. Her father, a professional gambler, sinks into despair but arouses from it to win a Coach House and Inn along with other property, which he gives to her. A slave, Meg, part of the winnings, is freed and stays on to work for them. They operate the property, and when the gold strike of 1848 sweeps the country, they become quite wealthy operating the Coach House and Inn. She meets and is attracted to a young gold seeker, Theodore, to whom she has let a room at the inn while waiting for the ship to take him to California, and after a whirlwind courtship, they marry and then leave for California. Another young man, Eli, has arrived, and though bound for the gold fields, he plans to open a general store supplying the prospectors and accepts Theodore as a partner in the venture, and they quickly become friends. The ship arrives, and the trio finally set out for California. Both she and her new husband develop malaria while on board, and Theodore dies at sea. With no one else to care for her, Eli nurses her through it, saving her life Arriving in San Francisco, Eli heads for the gold fields, where he sets up a store in a new frontier boom town. Dorothy remains in San Francisco, acting as agent but, tiring of this, joins Eli in the new store. A disgruntled worker stabs Eli. She shoots the worker, thereby saving Elis’s life. Now it’s her turn to nurse him, and they confess their love, and he proposes. The colorful era is the background to a love story and the adventures of a courageous young woman who is forced to face challenges and succeeds.

The story of Harriet Smith Pullen’s early life, from her childhood journeys by covered wagon to her family’s subsistence in sod houses on the Dakota prairie where they survived grasshopper plagues, floods, fires, blizzards, and droughts is a narrative of American migration and adventure that still resonates today. But there is much more to the legendary woman’s life, revealed here for the first time by Eleanor Phillips Brackbill, her great-granddaughter, who has traveled the path of her ancestor, delving into unpublished material, as well as sharing family stories in this American story that will capture the imagination of a new generation. After migrating by emigrant train to Washington Territory, Harriet endured typhoid fever and a shipwreck, then homesteaded among the Quileute people on the coast of Washington, where she married Dan Pullen, with whom she was an equal partner in ranching and managing an Indian fur-trading post before a life-changing series of events caused her to strike out for the north. In 1897, she landed in Skagway, Alaska, broke and alone after leaving her husband and four children in Washington, determined to make a fresh start and to reunite with her sons and daughter. Newly independent and empowered, she became an entrepreneur, single-handedly hauling prospectors’ provisions into the mountains where gold beckoned and then starting the Pullen House, an acclaimed hotel. Later in life, Harriet would entertain her guests with fabulous stories about the gold rush and her renowned collection of Alaskan Native artifacts and gold rush relics. She achieved near-legendary status in Alaska during her lifetime and The Queen of Heartbreak Trail brings to life moments that are well known and moments that have never before been published—her arrest for holding a claim jumper at gunpoint, her grueling courtroom testimony defending herself against the spurious accusations of a malevolent employer, and, how, in her father’s words, she “turned out” her husband of twenty years.
