It is expressed constantly in their everyday efforts to care for other people and develop themselves. The creativity of these writers will inspire you to value your own voice and meaning through the wide range of life's experiences, from cooking to praying, from walking down the street to reviewing your history. Over the last 10 years Gaye I. Clemson, a resident of Algonquin Park, has been collecting stories and manuscripts from fellow Algonquin Park residents in an ongoing effort to capture the voices of over 100 years of leasehold experience. One such set of experiences are those from what now is a public campground on the east side of Algonquin Park, but in former days was a railway station called Rock Lake Station. Established in 1896 with the coming of the Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway, Rock Lake Station was for over forty years a bustling center for Algonquin park tourism and commerce. At its' peak in 1910, history indicates that up to six trains a day passed through. Most were freight trains moving wheat and other products from western Canada to markets in mid-western United States, Ottawa and Montreal. Unfortunately the building of a highway through the park in the 1930's led to the demise of the railway in the late 1940's. These events sealed Rock Lake Station's fate and today there are no signs of its existence, unless one knows where and how to look. This book is the third in a series of narratives designed to bring to life the human history of Algonquin Park with specific focus on the active and vibrant Rock Lake and Whitefish Lake community.

When David was eight years old, his grandparents could be found at opposite ends of the state. His dads parents lived amid the Allegany Mountains near Flintstone, Maryland, just east of Cumberland, and his moms parents lived across the Chesapeake Bay, near Ridgley. Teeter knew he resided in between, at the center, in the suburbs of Washington, DC. In this memoir, Teeter describes the contributions these four grandparents made in his life as a young baby boomer. In Grandparents Four Good, he narrates how his grandparents animals, holiday meals, informal teaching, and essential identity helped weave his developing consciousness into the American story. He tells how the paradoxes in the lives of the grandparents highlight the complex texture of that larger national tale. One grandfather supported Roosevelt, the other didnt. One grandmother remained yoked to an old established patriarchy; the other moved with freedom enough to unleash a vast energy in community service. Grandparents Four Good presents four personal portraits, but it also illustrates the positive power of grandparental influence on a young character. The biographical and historical detail shows grandparents creating the future by simply living and reverencing the past.
