This handbook addresses the practical considerations for engineering of grounding systems, subsystems, and other components of ground networks. Electrical noise reduction is discussed as it relates to the proper installation of ground systems. Power distribution systems are covered to the degree necessary to understand the interrelationships between grounding, power distribution, and electrical noise reduction. The information provided in this handbook primarily concerns grounding, bonding, and shielding of fixed plant telecommunications-electronics facilities; however, it also provides basic guidance in the grounding of deployed transportable communications/electronics equipment. Grounding, bonding, and shielding are approached from a total system concept, which comprises four basic subsystems in accordance with current Department of Defense (DOD) guidance. These subsystems are as follows: (a) An earth electrode subsystem; (b) A lightning protection subsystem; (c) A fault protection subsystem; and (d) A signal reference subsystem.

This documentary provides basic and application information on grounding, bonding, and shielding practices recommended for electronic equipment. It will provide valuable information and guidance to personnel concerned with the preparation of specifications and the procurement of electrical and electronic equipment for the Defense Communications System. The handbook is not intended to be referenced in purchase specifications except for informational purposes, nor shall it supersede any specification requirements. Every effort has been made to reflect the latest information on the interrelation of considerations of electrochemistry, metallurgy, electromagnetics, and atmospheric physics.

MIL-HDBK-419A 29 DECEMBER 1987 Volume 1 of 2 Basic Theory Unfortunately, few Military Handbooks address the need for defense against electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and cybersecurity. While EMP has been thought of as a remote possibility (who in his right mind is going to launch a nuclear weapon of any kind against the U.S.?) Advances in non-nuclear EMP, miniaturization of electronics and autonomous drones suddenly brings EMP into the role of the possible. No longer would an adversary need to risk retaliation when a drone from an unknown source attacks a vital facility. The information in this book is part of the solution to the question "How do we defend against EMP?" Each copy of the MIL HNDBKs we publish includes a list of cybersecurity publications produced by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as well as Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) that are directly applicable to the topic for consideration during the planning process. List of Other Applicable EMP Publications: MIL-STD-188-125-1 High-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) Protection For Ground-Based C4I Facilities Performing Critical, Time-Urgent Missions MIL-STD-188-124A Grounding, Bonding and Shielding for Common Long Haul/Tactical Communication Systems MIL-HDBK -1195 Radio Frequency Shielded Enclosures TOP 01-2-620 High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) Testing MIL-HDBK-1012/1 Electronic Facilities Engineering MIL-HDBK-1013/1A Design Guidelines for Physical Security of Facilities Why buy a book you can download for free? We print this book so you don't have to. First you gotta find a good clean (legible) copy and make sure it's the latest version (not always easy). Some documents found on the web are missing some pages or the image quality is so poor, they are difficult to read. We look over each document carefully and replace poor quality images by going back to the original source document. We proof each document to make sure it's all there - including all changes. If you find a good copy, you could print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people (typically its either out of paper or toner). If it's just a 10-page document, no problem, but if it's 250-pages, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. It's much more cost-effective to just order the latest version from Amazon.com This book includes original commentary which is copyright material. Note that government documents are in the public domain. We print these large documents as a service so you don't have to. The books are compact, tightly-bound, full-size (8 1⁄2 by 11 inches), with large text and glossy covers. If you like the service we provide, please leave positive review on Amazon.com.
