Conducted under the umbrella of Project Gunrunner, intended to stem the flow of firearms to Mexico, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) ran a series of “gun walking” sting operations, including Operations Wide Receiver and Operation Fast & Furious. The government allowed licensed gun dealers to sell weapons to illegal straw buyers so that they could continue to track the firearms as they were transferred to higher-level traffickers and key figures in Mexican cartels. Motivated by a sense of patriotic duty, Tucson gun dealer and author Mike Detty alerted the local ATF office when he was first approached by suspected cartel associates. Detty made the commitment and assumed the risks involved to help the feds make their case, often selling guns to these thugs from his home in the dead of night. Originally informed that the investigation would last just weeks, Detty’s undercover involvement in Operation Wide Receiver, the precursor to Operation Fast & Furious, which was by far the largest “gun walking” probe, stretched on for an astonishing and dangerous three years. Though the case took several twists and turns, perhaps the cruelest turn was his betrayal by the very agency he risked everything to help.

In 1838, American extremist groups invaded Canada at several places, thinking Canadians would rise up to "throw off the British yoke". It never occurred to them they were invading Loyalist country, where strong memories remained of the conflicts of the American Revolution and the flight north to remain under the British crown. In one of the most ambitious incursions, members of the Patriot Hunters sailed down the St Lawrence River in a hijacked steamship and landed near Prescott, Ontario, where they occupied a stone windmill. It took five days of bloody fighting by soldiers and militia to capture the invaders.

“An eye-opening and riveting account of how guns make it into the black market and into the hands of criminals and drug lords.”--Adam Winkler From the author of El Narco and winner of the Maria Moors Cabot Prize, a searing investigation into the enormous black market for firearms, essential to cartels and gangs in the drug trade and contributing to the epidemic of mass shootings. The gun control debate is revived with every mass shooting. But far more people die from gun deaths on the street corners of inner city America and across the border as Mexico's powerful cartels battle to control the drug trade. Guns and drugs aren't often connected in our heated discussions of gun control-but they should be. In Ioan Grillo's groundbreaking new work of investigative journalism, he shows us this connection by following the market for guns in the Americas and how it has made the continent the most murderous on earth. Grillo travels to gun manufacturers, strolls the aisles of gun shows and gun shops, talks to federal agents who have infiltrated biker gangs, hangs out on Baltimore street corners, and visits the ATF gun tracing center in West Virginia. Along the way, he details the many ways that legal guns can cross over into the black market and into the hands of criminals, fueling violence here and south of the border. Simple legislative measures would help close these loopholes, but America's powerful gun lobby is uncompromising in its defense of the hallowed Second Amendment. Perhaps, however, if guns were seen not as symbols of freedom, but as key accessories in our epidemics of addiction, the conversation would shift. Blood Gun Money is that conversation shifter.

"Guns are relational: they can be tools of violence or of protection. Bullets injure individuals and communities, creating collective damage. In the United States, gun violence has reached alarming levels, but the effects of firearms sold in this country don't stop at its borders. American guns have torn the social fabric of Mexican society in ways that have entangled the lives of citizens on both sides of the border-Mexicans and Americans-in a vicious circle of violence. While migrants and refugees are fleeing north, seeking safety in the United States, Exit Wounds follows the guns going south, from dealers in Arizona and Texas to crime scenes in Mexico. Through stories of people who live and work with guns on both sides of the border and either side of the law-a businessman who smuggles guns, a girl who becomes a trained assassin, two federal agents who try to stop gun traffickers, a journalist reporting on organized crime-the book grapples with US complicity in violence south of the border and examines the impact of American guns on both countries"--

"Former ICE Special Agent Victor Avila's story of survival and courage is a harrowing must read. His dedication to obtaining justice for his partner, Jaime Zapata, who was murdered just inches away while on assignment in Mexico, is honorable and a reflection of his character. The government coverup of what happened and their retaliation against him for telling the truth is unforgivable. You won't be able to put this book down." -Katie Pavlich, Townhall Editor, Fox News contributor and Best-selling author Agent Under Fire: A Murder and a Manifesto is a true story of unprecedented corruption, international intrigue, human trafficking, money laundering, drug-running, mass murders, and government evasion. Chalk full of page-turning stories and revelatory insights into Mexico's criminal underworld, this book moves beyond the everyday true crime memoir and delves into the larger question of what it means for a family man to put his life on the line every day to topple some of the cruelest criminal organizations known to mankind. The book also serves as a manifesto, exploring solutions to misguided immigration policies and offering a unique perspective on what it will take to control our southern border and protect vulnerable American families. Victor Avila is a retired Supervisory Special Agent with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). While on assignment in Mexico, Special Agent Avila suffered multiple gunshot wounds and survived a violent ambush by the Los Zetas drug cartel. Special Agent Jaime Zapata was killed. Mr. Avila has been recognized for Excellence in Law Enforcement by the ICE Hispanic Agents Association; and has received The Director's Award for Operation in Plain Sight in Mexico; Homeland Security Investigations Excellence in Public Service Award; The Valor Award by the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA); and many other awards and honors. He is an advocate for border security, immigration reform, human trafficking awareness and the protection of our sovereignty - and has been featuredon FoxNews, i24News, Univision, OANN and various Radio and Podcast interviews.
