Excerpt from A Handbook on the Diagnosis of Skin Diseases In the following pages I have endeavoured to give a sketch of the symptomatology of skin diseases, or of the characteristics by which we recognize or distinguish one skin affection from another. With this object in view, I have in some instances confined ray remarks chiefly to the differential diagnosis. For example, in such well-known maladies as Scabies and Eczema, I have not thought it necessary to give a very minute description of the disease, but have rather preferred to draw attention to the peculiarities and distinctive points which enable us to form a sound and rapid diagnosis. In dealing, however, with the rarer skin affections, such as Lupus, Hydroa, Xanthoma, Purpura rheumatica, and Scleroderma, I have given a more detailed description of their symptoms, but have only touched on their etiology when it has had some important bearing on diagnosis. I have given references to the best plates in common use for the convenience of those who wish to consult them.
