When it comes to the Balkans, most people quickly become lost in the quagmire of struggle and intractable hatred that consumes that ancient land today. Many assume that the genesis of the past ten years of atrocity in the region might have had something to do with Tito and his repressive Yugoslav regime, or perhaps with the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in 1914. The seeds were really planted much, much earlier, on a desolate plain in Kosovo in 1389, when the Serbian Prince Lazar and his army clashed with and were defeated by the Ottoman forces of Sultan Murad I. In this riveting new history of the Balkan peoples, Andréerolymatos explores how ancient events engendered cultural myths that evolved over time, gaining psychic strength in the collective consciousnesses of Orthodox Christians and Muslims alike. In colorful detail, we meet the key figures that instigated and perpetuated these myths-including the assassin/heroes Milos Obolic and Gavrilo Princip and the warlord Ali Pasha. This lively survey of centuries of strife finally puts the modern conflicts in Bosnia and Kosovo into historical context, and provides a long overdue account of the origins of ethnic hatred and warmongering in this turbulent land.

In 1912, the Balkan states formed an alliance in an effort to break free from the crumbling Ottoman Empire. Forming an army of some 645,000 troops from Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenego, they took on a force of 400,000 Turkish soldiers. Both sides were equipped with the latest weapons technology. This book looks at the diverse and sometimes colourful uniforms worn by both sides, paying special attention to insignia, weapons and equipment. It also gives an overview of the campaigns that became a 'priming pan' of World War I.

Excerpt from The Balkan Cockpit: The Political and Military Story of the Balkan Wars in Macedonia Several circumstances have combined to retard the publication of these reminiscences Of the epoch making events which have opened a new chapter in Balkan history. Delay in such cases has its advantages. If some vivid impressions are lost, we are, on the other hand, able to correct too hastily drawn conclusions and to appreciate moves on the diplomatic chess - board which were, at the time, incomprehensible. Excerpt from The Balkan Wars, Being a Series of Lectures Delivered at the Army Service Schools, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas In Accepting the burden of proof for my presumption, as a non-combatant, in addressing a body of officers of the combatant arms of the service on such a subject as "The Balkan Wars," I feel it incumbent upon me to give a brief account of my contact with the Balkan situation, covering a period of eighteen months, which afforded the opportunity for my observations. About the 1st of July, 1912, I landed in Trieste on sick leave of absence which was later arranged to terminate with the end of the year. From this port I took passage for a tour of the Dalmatian coast, on the eastern shore of the Adriatic, stopping at Pola, the principal Austrian naval base, Sebinicio, Spalato, Ragusa, and as far south as Cattaro, at the head of the Bays of Cattaro, which form a harbor much like that of New York with the sea as far away from the port as Sandy Hook is from Castle Garden. Cattaro, while Austrian and one of the finest naval harbors in the world, is the logical port of Cetenje, the capital of Montenegro. As an automobile post-route line between Cattaro and Cetenje was discovered, I continued my journey to Cetenje and the Lake of Scutari. On returning to the northern Adriatic by the same route, I landed at Flume, crossed by rail to Trieste and thence by sea to Venice. In September, 1912, I went by rail from Vienna, through Buda-Pest, Belgrade, Sofia and Adrianople, to Constantinople, where I remained three weeks with my friend. Major J.R. M.Taylor, our capable and accomplished military attache. There were, at that time, echoing about Constantinople large and glowing rumors of the coming war, but as one can always hear anything and everything, both true and false, anywhere in the near East, and not knowing what or whom to believe, I grew so impatient in waiting for the long-advertised and often postponed "Balkan conflagration" that I sought refuge again in the less distrustful environments of Paris, returning there by way of the Black Sea through Constanza and Bucharest. War was actually declared between the Balkan States and Turkey on October 17, 1912. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The history of the Balkans incorporates all the major historical themes of the 20th Century--the rise of nationalism, communism and fascism, state-sponsored genocide and urban warfare. Focusing on the centuries opening decades, War in the Balkans seeks to shed new light on the Balkan Wars through approaching each regional and ethnic conflict as a separate actor, before placing them in a wider context. Although top-down 'Great Powers' historiography is often used to describe the beginnings of the World War I, not enough attention has been paid to the events in the region in the years preceding the Archduke Ferdinand's assassination. The Balkan Wars saw the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, the end of the Bulgarian Kingdom (then one of the most powerful military countries in the region), an unprecedented hardening of Serbian nationalism, the swallowing up of Slovenes, Croats and Slovaks in a larger Balkan entity, and thus set in place the pattern of border realignments which would become familiar for much of the twentieth century.

Excerpt from Venizelos To be specific, within the field of this biography, with out the observations Of the reporter who knew how the people felt at the moment, it would be impossible for the future historian to estimate accurately the factors that precipitated the Second Balkan War, that kept Greece neutral in 1915 and 1916, and that dictated the policy of Venizelos at the Peace Conference. I make no secret of my deep sympathy with the cause of Hellenism and my admiration for my subject. But this book is neither panegyric nor propaganda. Warm friends I have had, and still have, among the Bulgarians, and as a college teacher in the Near East during the period under survey, I came into intimate association with all the Balkan nationalities and the Turks as well. Each race has its good qualities. Each race has suffered from the blight of the Ottoman yoke. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
