His expertise caused him to become unintentionally involved in one adventure after another, having to use his sling to either help someone or get himself out of a jam. His parents are trying to "train him up in the way he should go" as he grows up. They warn him of the great responsibility he has to use the sling safely. His father uses Bible Scripture to teach him the lessons of Christian living along the way.
