Excerpt from Henry VIII and the English Monasteries In introducing the present edition of Henry VIII. and the English Monasteries to the public, a few words are almost necessary by way of preface. In the ten years which have elapsed since the publication of the original edition, considerable progress has been made towards the completion of the truly monumental Calendar of Papers, Foreign and Domestic, of the Reign of Henry VIII., edited by Mr. James Gairdner. A very large number of documents which during some years of work I had consulted in the Record Office in loose bundles, or in the great collection of fifty-two volumes, then known as the Crumwell Correspondence, and to which I had referred my readers by the only indication then possible, have now been arranged in bound volumes and catalogued under the number given in Mr. Gairdner's Calendar. This rendered my old references practically useless; for not only were the bundles of loose papers re-arranged and distributed as at present, but the volumes of letters above referred to were also broken up and incorporated in the present volumes of state papers of all kinds. As no record has apparently been kept of their former places in the original volumes, the old references no longer sufficed to obtain the documents.
