This concise book presents the basic concepts of magnetism and magnetic properties pertinent to permanent magnetic materials. Emphasis is placed on hexaferrite materials for permanent magnet applications, with M-type ferrites as the focal point. The relatively high metallicity of magnetic materials for practical applications imposes limitations for their efficient use. Accordingly, magnetic oxides with ferromagnetic properties emerged as the most widely used magnetic materials for practical applications, owing to their characteristic high resistivity and low eddy current losses, chemical stability, simplicity of production in mass quantities, and other favorable characteristics. An important class of these oxides is the class of hexagonal ferrites developed in the early 1950’s, which dominated the world market of permanent magnet applications since the end of the 1980’s. Among these ferrites, the magnetoplumbite (M-type) hexaferrite, is produced nowadays in large quantities at very competitive low prices, thus providing the permanent magnet market with probably the most cost-effective magnetic material.

Below is a copy of Professor Takeshi Takei's original preface that he wrote for my first book, Modem Ferrite Teclmology. I was proud to receive this preface and include it here with pride and affection. We were saddened to learn of his death at 92 on March 12, 1992. Preface It is now some 50 years since ferrites debuted as an important new category of magnetic materials. They were prized for a range of properties that had no equivalents in existing metal magnetic materials, and it was not long before full-fledged research and development efforts were underway. Today, ferrites are employed in a truly wide range of applications, and the efforts of the many men and women working in the field are yielding many highly intriguing results. New, high-performance products are appearing one after another, and it would seem we have only scratched the surface of the hidden possibilities of these fascinating materials. Dr. Alex Goldman is well qualified to talk about the state of the art in ferrites. For many years Dr. Goldman has been heavily involved in the field as director of the research and development division of Spang & Co. and other enterprises. This book, Modem Ferrite Technology, based in part on his own experiences, presents a valuable overview of the field. It is testimony to his commitment and bountiful knowledge about one oftoday's most intriguing areas of technology.

This book offers an essential compendium on the analysis and design of synchronous motors for variable-speed applications. Focusing on synchronous reluctance and ferrite permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous reluctance machines, it provides a broad perspective on three-phase machines for variable speed applications, a field currently dominated by asynchronous machines and rare-earth PM synchronous machines. It also describes synchronous reluctance machines and PM machines without rare-earth materials, comparing them to state-of-the-art solutions. The book provides readers with extensive information on and finite element models of PM synchronous machines, including all relevant equations and with an emphasis on synchronous-reluctance and PM-assisted synchronous-reluctance machines. It covers ferrite-assisted machines, modeled as a subcase of PM-assistance, fractional slot combinations solutions, and a quantitative, normalized comparison of torque capability with benchmark PM machines. The book discusses a wealth of techniques for identifying machine parameters, with an emphasis on self-commissioning algorithms, and presents methods for automated machine design and optimization, including a software tool developed for this purpose. Addressing an important gap in the field of PM-less and less-PM electrical machines, it is intended as a self-contained reference guide for both graduate students and professional machine designers, and as a useful text for university courses on automated and/or optimized design of electrical machines and drives.

Permanent magnets play an increasingly important role in modern society because they are vital components of numerous domestic and industrial devices. The last few decades have witnessed a quite extraordinary development in the use of hard magnetic materials, especially after the advent of rare earth permanent magnets. The rare earth permanent magnets are unequalled because they combine a high magnetization with an extraordinary magnetic hardness which allows the use of such magnets having the extreme shapes and small dimensions as required in modern devices.
