Excerpt from Highways and Byways of the South Yet I cannot say that Florida on closer acquaintance seemed quite worthy of its name; for if you would have a profusion of flowers, you must nurse and coax them. They are not such a spontaneous product of the climate as one would expect. The soil is too poor, and nowhere did the blossoms brighten and gladden the earth as our spring flowers do in the North. Indeed, the aspect of the country is for the most part rather monotonously sober - an unending, sandy level overspread with pine woods, and a low, spiny under growth of palmetto scrub. After leaving Jacksonville, where I had disembarked, I first of all visited St. Augustine, and saw its ancient fort and massive city gateway. The fort is of genuine mediaeval type, the only one of its kind in America. Its gray, weatherworn stones proclaim its great age, the rooms are satisfactorily gloomy and dungeon-like, and you can trace the course of the old moat round about. Both the fort and the gateway date back to the time when St. Augustine was a Spanish walled town. The place itself has one or two curious narrow thorough fares and odd survivals of bygone architecture, but its prevailing characteristics are those of a fashionable pleasure resort. All the open fields on the outskirts have been taken possession of by the golf-players. Once, when I had stopped to watch a game, an old colored man came along and leaned over the picket fence near me. I want to see what they gwine do, he said. Good gracious alive! Excerpt from Highways and Byways in South Wales A few prefatory remarks to this book appear to me to be almost imperative if only to explain some apparent sins of omission, or, to come at once to the point and the singular number, the omission of Glamorgan. The title of the volume, it is true, involves it in no particular geographical obligations; but I should not like to incur even a suspicion of making light of the abounding attractions, natural and historical, of this great county, or of being ignorant of them. The plain fact, 'however, is that the large area of South Wales, when measured by the exigencies of my space, rendered the omission of a portion of, it absolutely inevitable. Monmouthshire, having been 'for so long technically, if illogically, outside Wales, lent itself to excision at once with out the necessity for comment, and relieved me of part of the difficulty. Excerpt from Highways and Byways of the Pacific Coast The several volumes in this series have as a rule very little to say of the large towns. Country life is their chief topic, especially the typical and the picturesque. TO the traveller, no life is more interesting, and yet there is none with which it is so difficult to get into close and unconventional contact. Ordinarily, we catch only casual glimpses. For this reason I have wandered much on rural byways and lodged most of the time at village hotels or in rustic homes. My trips have taken me to many characteristic and famous regions; but always in both text and pictures I have tried to Show actual life and nature and to convey some of the pleasure I experienced in my intimate acquaintance with the people. These Highways and Byways volumes are often consulted by persons who are planning pleasure tours. To make the books more helpful for this purpose each chapter has a note appended containing suggestions for intending travellers. With the aid of these notes, I think the reader can readily decide what regions are likely to prove particularly worth visiting, and will know how to see such regions with the most comfort and facility. Excerpt from Highways and Byways in Dorset The county of Dorset is small, but is yet so varied in its configuration as to present an epitome of the scenery of Southern England. It is a land of moods and changes that knows no monotony, and is indeed so full of hills and dales that there is scarcely a level road within its confines, save by the banks of streams. It is crossed by a range of chalk downs whose lonely heights are worn smooth by the wind and are traversed only by shepherds and their sheep. To the East is the Great Heath, a wild, sandy fragment of unchanged Britain, which is still just as it was when the Celts first wandered over the island. To the North lie the glorious woods of Cranborne Chase and the enchanting Vale of Blackmore - that valley of the Blue Mist in whose soft shadows will be found the very heart of England.
