Numerical growth and the geographic expansion of Christianity required Christian communities to become quite creative. Detached from its Jewish matrix and its original environment, and influenced by new living conditions, the church's institutions and practices developed gradually. These developments reflect the various social settings in which they were born, consequently, the author notes the diversity of customs across regions. This volume intends to offer an overview of the birth and development of Ancient Christianity's institutions and practices in their variety and diversity.

From the dawn of mankind's imagination, we have sought the favour of elemental powers and attempted to appease them with worship and sacrifice. The story of religion is one of learning to live with evolving social structures and determining how faith can provide a structure of beliefs through which we can deal with the world around us. In Historical Atlas of Religions, Karen Farrington shows how different cultures' beliefs evolved, how their influence spread, and where they came into conflict with each other. The book is not partisan; its aims are to enlighten and not to preach, and to put each religion into its own proper context. Historical Atlas of Religions is a delightful encyclopedia of human spiritual endeavor from the earliest forms of animism to the established faiths of modern times.

Atlases that represent the first 1500 years of Christianity can, for the most part, safely rely on ethnic and national boundaries to provide the basic context for the maps and drawings that illustrate change. Yet as one approaches the modern period, when the credal preferences of rulers and governments become decreasingly determinative, the geographical portrayal of religion becomes more problematic. In our era this becomes more pronounced. How does one graphically portray Lutheran Sweden or Catholic Spain when only 3.6 per cent and 15 per cent respectively are actually practising. Which is the best way to represent the life of Christians in China, Indonesia or the Sudan? Franklin Littell's method is to highlight those times and places of crisis and decision - both internal and external - in which the shape and direction of Christianity was determined. Particular attention is paid to the interaction of Christians and Jews and to the encounter of Christianity and Islam. Three main areas are emphasized: theology and dogma, ethical and moral life and the expansion of Christianity to a world religion.
