Of Danforth and Julianna (brooks) Armour, whose former home was in Union. Connecticut, whither they removed to his birthplace in September, 1825. The family consisted of six sons and two daughters, all of whom were reared on the farm homestead and were educated in the typical district school. Philip was fortunate enough to enjoy, in addition, the benefits of the Stockbridge Academy, and even there he was marked as a leader by his associates. The excitement over the discovery of gold in California in 1849 seethed for three years in the little village of Stockbridge before a company of its people was finally organized, and Philip D. Armour. Then twenty years of age, was among the first and most enthusiastic to volunteer for the overland trip.
