The book is a trivia list of multiple choice questions where the answer is always "d." Mimicking the style of the author - humorist Mr. Dave Barry, it seeks to impart a smattering of knowledge about popes - most especially the more oddball ones. For example, whereas Bill Clinton was taken to task for engaging in sex with a White House intern, Pope Alexander VI was accused of fathering a child ... with his own daughter. Other pontiffs among this papal roster of rascals include: John VIII - he created a navy, captured 18 enemy ships, and was hammered to death by his own bishops; John XII - he committed incest with his sisters, raped female tourists, and was murdered by a jealous husband; Formosus - his rotting corpse was dug up, dressed in pontifical vestments, placed on trial, and found guilty; John XX - he never existed - Pope John XXI simply had difficulty counting that high; Benedict IX - he became pope three times, was nicknamed the "Demon From Hell," and auctioned off the papacy, and; Joan - for centuries the Catholic Church preached as gospel that it had once been ruled by a WOMAN pope! Over the past two millennia, there have been 264 true popes with another 30 or so imposters, or "antipopes." The vast majority of these have been Italian, along with 15 French, 3 Martians, 1 English, 1 Dutch, 1 Polish, and a partridge in a pear tree. In theory, any male Roman Catholic laymen can become pope. But, in reality, usually only cardinals make the cut. And, needless to say, no woman has ever been elected pope (except Pope Joan). Why the title "idiots" you might well ask? Simple. When it comes to history, most Americans are, shall we say, somewhat "intellectually challenged." They are not born that way, nor is the condition self-inflicted. They are victims. They hate history simply because misguided fools (called teachers) have crammed their heads full of meaningless, politically correct rubbish.

This book is a 'fancy that' crossed with a 'believe it or not' look at certain aspects of papal history with emphasis on the unexplored and the obscure - with considerable embellishment from computer-aided analytics (by now a well recognized forte of the author). The '101' bullet points dealt with in this book, per its title, covering at least 202 nuggets of insight, are divided across 7 chapters, titled: Ecumenical Councils, Names, Firsts, Dates, Conclaves, Pope Celestine V and Pope Francis. The chapter on 'Dates' looks at topics such as the first precisely recorded data in papal history, the last pope whose date of death is unknown and the recent pope who was born on Holy Saturday while the chapter on 'Firsts' talks about the first layman to be elected pope, the first cardinal bishop to be pope and the first pope known to have communicated, in writing, with the imperial court in Istanbul. Each chapter contains at least 12 bullet items. This is the author's 9th book on popes; he the author of 'Popes and the Tale of their Names', the two 'Next Pope Books', 'The Last 10 Conclaves', 'The Election of the 2013 Pope' and 'Pope John XXIII: 101 Facts & Trivia'. He is also the publisher of the blogs 'popes-and-papacy' and 'papam.wordpress.com' where his work, especially his research and analytics of papal history has been cited on 'Vatican Radio' and 'Rome Reports'. Reviews of his papal books on Amazon include comments such as: "And there are much data which you will find no place other than the author's books," "It's far and away the most comprehensive I've seen on the subject (and I've read a few)," "it bears evidence of careful and exhaustive and unusual research" and "This is an amazing book, delving into the subject of papal names in a way I have never seen before." This book is a continuation of the author's commitment to "careful and exhaustive and unusual research" when it comes to papal history. So much is known about Pope Francis, but where did he stay in Rome ahead of the conclave that elected him pope, what was the pet he kept while a seminarian and who owned the Fisherman's Ring that he wears? All of these items and more are dealt with in Chapter 7 along with the story of Cardinal Bergoglio and the rubber bands. This is the authors third '101 Facts and Trivia' book. The others being on 'Comets' and 'Pope John XXIII'. There is a hope that one day there might be a 'Vol. II' to this book. The best thing to do if this book looks even a bit interesting is to check it out using the 'Look Inside' feature of Amazon. What you see could intrigue you. The book is likely to contain some 'typos' though it has been fairly thoroughly 'proofed' by a number of qualified folks. As many 'typos' will be fixed in each Kindle revision. If the 'typos' bother you please return the book and get a full refund - rather than complaining about it.

A 'Twitter-age', bullet-point biography of the 'Good Pope', still the most popular pope ever (Pope Francis notwithstanding), to mark his April 27, 2014 canonization by Anura Guruge, the author of 'The Next Pope 2011' [which had Cardinal Bergoglio in the 'Top 10'], 'Popes and the Tale of their Names', 'The Last 10 Conclaves' etc. He is also the publisher of the blogs 'popes-and-papacy' and 'papam.wordpress.com' where his work, especially his research and analysis of papal history has been cited on 'Vatican Radio' and 'Rome Reports'.Though structured in the form of 101 'Q & As' to promote a sense of interaction, this book nonetheless is a comprehensive biography, with nothing of significance overlooked or omitted, of Angelo Roncalli's amazing life from his birth all the way to his canonization. The nine chapters that make up this book are thus headed: The Papabile, The Youth, The Priest, The Archbishop, The Nuncio, The Patriarch, The Pope, The Saint & The Sayings. Given the author's known penchant for historical detail the biographical narrative in this book is heavy on background, context, perspective, analysis and per the title, trivia. It is a book for those that have always wanted to know more about this Pope, the one that convoked Vatican II, but had felt that they did not have the time to read one of the many traditional biographies of his life. This '101' book is designed for the pell-mell lifestyle of the 'Facebook age'. It is ideally suited to be read on mobile devices, in bits and pieces, in planes, trains, coffee shops and parks. This is the author's second '101' book, the first having been the one about comets in 2013. Comments from readers indicate that they like the numbered 'bullet point' presentation which encourages the reader to skip around picking and choosing what they want to read. The '101', however', is a bit of a misnomer, as was the case with the comet book. There is way more than 101 items of information and trivia in this book. The best thing to do is to check it out using the 'Look Inside' feature of Amazon. The print and Kindle version of this book, though sharing the same text, differ in terms of page formatting and the images included – the printed version containing more images. The book is likely to contain some 'typos' though it has been 'proofed' by a number of qualified folks. How many Catholics know that a priest invented the fax machine, or that monks were the first to make coffee, champagne, and pretzels? How many know why St. Elmo is portrayed in art with his intestines hanging out, or why St. Maximus is often shown commanding a bear to carry his luggage? Probably none. The Catholic Church is all too eager to tell us about the Ten Commandments, the Resurrection, and the glories of St. Peter's Basilica, but how often do you hear about items like "Pope on a Rope" soap, or the "Let Us Spray" lawn sprinkler (shaped like Pope John Paul II, the sprinkler squirts water out of his outstretched arms as it spins)? It's all here in "Pope-Pourri"-- an unprecendented collection of entertaining anecdotes, trivia, and intriguing information that the Catholic Church never told you about-- and in many cases doesn't want you to know about. Such as the bizarre story of the "Cadaver Synod", when Pope Stephen VI dug up the rotting corpse of his predecessor, Pope Formosus I, dressed it in papal robes, and put it on trial for "aspiring to the papacy" and other crimes. Other unusual footnotes to Catholic history include the Cataphrygians, an early separatist movement whose members prayed with their index and middle fingers inserted into their noses. "Pope-Pourri" celebrates the wealth of amusing trivia the Church has produced during its 2,000-year history-- from oddball saints to the Vatican's censorious movie reviews, from strange Virgin Mary sightings to embarrasing secret scandals-- presented for the first time in one fascinating volume that practicing Catholics, lapsed Catholics, and the merely curious will all enjoy.

What's the definition of those theological words like eschatology? hermeneutics? supralapsarianism? Can I join the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys? Who was St. Patrick and is it true he wasn't Irish? How is it that nearly every hotel room has a Gideon's Bible? Steve Wilkens offers answers and reflections on these and scores of other questions in this thoroughly instructional and often amusing almanac of things you should have learned in Sunday School, but somehow didn't. Also offered are quizzes on famous biblical phrases and definitions of theological terms. This volume is thoroughly instructional, and totally fun. A great gift! Market/Audience Gift buyers Humour readers Laypeople Endorsements "Almanacs are a wonderful American tradition. From Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanac to The Farmer's Almanac, people have been able to count on them to provide useful information, helpful hints about everything under the sun and occasional heart-warming stories. Year after year, they enrich our lives. Dr. Steve's Almanac is not like that." GARY W. MOON, Ph.D., vice president and chair of integration, Psychological Studies Institute, and author of Falling for God "I kept telling his dad that lead-based paint wasn't a very good idea when we repainted his bedroom."
