Not illustrated. 1879 edition. Excerpt: ... DUBLIN CATHOLIC CEMETERIES. CHAPTER I. THE DUBLIN CATHOLIC CEMETERIES: THEIR FOUNDATION AND EXTENSION. The Dublin Catholic Cemeteries owe their existence to an organisation which forms a glorious feature in the modern history of Irerland. That organisation, created as it was by Ithe expression of the deeply-felt wrongs of the fcatholic propulation; developing as it did, the strength of long pent-up opinion, by prudent action, in the end brought to its consummation, by peaceful, legal, moral agitation--by wise, firm, and truthful expression, the great aim for which, for three generations, every Catholic from peer to peasant had longed--Emancipation. Let the beginnings of that great organisation be traced. On the 12th of May, 1823, a number of most respectable Catholic gentlemen assembled at "Dempsey's" in Sack ville-street, for the purpose of forming an association to conduct the Catholic affairs. Lord Viscount Killeen was called to the chair. Mr. O'Connell, proposed that an association should then be formed of such gentlemen as wished voluntarily to come forward for the purpose of conducting the affairs of the Irish Catholics relating to their political disabilities, and the means of having their grievances brought before Parliament. It was then resolved that it should be styled the "Irish Catholic Association." Thenceforth meetings assembled; they were held in the house of Mr. Coyne, the Catholic bookseller, No. 4 Capelstreet. They were conducted with earnestness, yet always with gravity and decorum. Business was transacted of importance to the cause; soon the grievances under which Catholics laboured formed the subject of a petition to the king, and a deputation to wait upon His Majesty, consisting of Catholic peers, and sons of peers, ...

Founded in 1832, Prospect Cemetery, Glasnevin rapidly became the largest cemetery in Ireland and a place of national importance. This book demonstrates how the Dublin Cemeteries' Committee conducted its affairs and managed the various aspects of the operation of the cemetery. In examining the interaction of the committee with its employees, the study focuses on the lives of the ordinary people connected with the cemetery and provides a fascinating insight into a particular type of nineteenth century working environment. The establishment of Prospect Cemetery coincided with burial reform and the rise of the 'garden cemetery' movement in Britain and Europe. The author examines the cemetery in that context and assesses how it compared with its contemporaries in terms of interment practices, design and layout. This book opens a window onto a broad vista of Victorian beliefs and attitudes, encompassing moral values, class consciousness, work practices, approaches to organisation and management, and design theories and movements.
