Excerpt from Home Mechanics for Amateurs A work of this character possesses equal merit with one entirely completed before the death of the author. As a rule such works have not had the ad vantage of the final perusal and correction by the author. Such has not, however, been the case in the present. Instance, for the following work by the late George M. Hopkins, was completed before his death. Tl ere is no doubt, however, that this volume will come as a surprise to thousands who have closely followed Mr. Hopkins' work, and who have enjoyed making the many experiments described by him. The present volume contains much matter which has never before appeared in print, and some articles which have al ready been published in the Scientific American. The object of the work is to furnish food for thought to the amateur, and to give him suggestions whereby he may pass many pleasant hours in his work-shop. Mr. Hop kins was an expert mechanic. One of his chief pleas ures was to make experiments at'his home in his well equipped work-shop and laboratory, and the work described in the present volume is nearly all the result of experiments made by him during such idle hours. It has been the intent of the author to make the present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Amateur Mechanic I might qualify the above statement by saying that if you are an amateur it will pay you to scan the following pages before you try to do mechanical things. The idea I have tried to carry out is to parallel the case of the locomotive engineer. You know, of course, that he did not build the engine he drives but he knows every part of it, exactly how it works, how to run it to get the most power, or speed, or both, out of it with the highest fuel economy and, further, if he should have a breakdown on the road he knows just how to make whatever repairs are needed to go on with his run. Excerpt from The Home Mechanic: A Manual for Industrial Schools and Amateurs This state of things is his misfortune, because he has no friend to teach him how to do without all these things which at first appear to him to be so absolutely necessary, and which, he is told at the shop, after he has bought his lathe, are essential. If he had the good fortune to have a friend who could teach him, he would begin by making his own lathe, and then proceed to make the tools he requires; this sounds. Rather difficult, and, to many, it may appear quite impossible, but it is by no means so; in many countries turners make their own lathes, which. Excerpt from Amateur Mechanics: A Book for Old and Young Who Like to Make ThingsThe box must be altered first. One end is removed, and a slit, onethird of the length from the remaining end, cut in 'one side. This slit should be the width of the box and about five inches wide. On either side of the box, half way from open end to closed end, should be cut a hole, just large enough to comfortably admit a hand and arm.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This unique textbook presents a novel, axiomatic pedagogical path from classical to quantum physics. Readers are introduced to the description of classical mechanics, which rests on Euler’s and Helmholtz’s rather than Newton’s or Hamilton’s representations. Special attention is given to the common attributes rather than to the differences between classical and quantum mechanics. Readers will also learn about Schrödinger’s forgotten demands on quantization, his equation, Einstein’s idea of ‘quantization as selection problem’. The Schrödinger equation is derived without any assumptions about the nature of quantum systems, such as interference and superposition, or the existence of a quantum of action, h. The use of the classical expressions for the potential and kinetic energies within quantum physics is justified. Key features: · Presents extensive reference to original texts. · Includes many details that do not enter contemporary representations of classical mechanics, although these details are essential for understanding quantum physics. · Contains a simple level of mathematics which is seldom higher than that of the common (Riemannian) integral. · Brings information about important scientists · Carefully introduces basic equations, notations and quantities in simple steps This book addresses the needs of physics students, teachers and historians with its simple easy to understand presentation and comprehensive approach to both classical and quantum mechanics..

Gregory's Classical Mechanics is a major new textbook for undergraduates in mathematics and physics. It is a thorough, self-contained and highly readable account of a subject many students find difficult. The author's clear and systematic style promotes a good understanding of the subject: each concept is motivated and illustrated by worked examples, while problem sets provide plenty of practice for understanding and technique. Computer assisted problems, some suitable for projects, are also included. The book is structured to make learning the subject easy; there is a natural progression from core topics to more advanced ones and hard topics are treated with particular care. A theme of the book is the importance of conservation principles. These appear first in vectorial mechanics where they are proved and applied to problem solving. They reappear in analytical mechanics, where they are shown to be related to symmetries of the Lagrangian, culminating in Noether's theorem.
