A land in ruins, a trust broken, and a ruler at breaking point in a world where nothing is quite as it seems. All Cail has ever wanted to do was serve his people. Steadfast, honourable, and loyal, he was born to rule, but he has seen his world torn apart and watched others playing the hero while he was doomed to failure. Now the cracks are showing. Fighting to retain his sanity, Cail becomes lost to his people, a lurking shadow, separated from those he loves. Can he ever come back from his despair? Has he gone too far to redeem himself? And will the interference of the mysterious Aeryn hinder all attempts to restore him? Feats of great courage and sacrifice dominate as Cails friends try to unravel dark mysteries and save his life. In contemporary America, myths find expression primarily in film. What's more, many of the highest-grossing American movies of the past several decades have been rooted in one of the most fundamental mythic narratives, the hero quest. Why is the hero quest so persistently renewed and retold? In what ways does this universal myth manifest itself in American cinema? And what is the significance of the popularity of these modern myths? The Hero and the Perennial Journey Home in American Film by Susan Mackey-Kallis is an exploration of the appeal of films that recreate and reinterpret this mythic structure. She closely analyzes such films as E.T., the Star Wars trilogy, It's a Wonderful Life, The Wizard of Oz, The Lion King, Field of Dreams, The Piano, Thelma and Louise, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Elements of the quest mythology made popular by Joseph Campbell, Homer's Odyssey, the perennial philosophy of Aldous Huxley, and Jungian psychology all contribute to the compelling interpretive framework in which Mackey-Kallis crafts her study. She argues that the purpose of the hero quest is not limited to the discovery of some boon or Holy Grail, but also involves finding oneself and finding a home in the universe. The home that is sought is simultaneously the literal home from which the hero sets out and the terminus of the personal growth he or she undergoes during the journey back. Thus the quest, Mackey-Kallis asserts, is an outward journey into the world of action and events which eventually requires a journey inward if the hero is to grow, and ultimately necessitates a journey homeward if the hero is to understand the grail and share it with the culture at large. Finally, she examines the value of mythic criticism and addresses questions about myth currently being debated in the field of communication studies.

If you're a fan of Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Star Wars and Robin Hood etc then you'll love Tales of Roumanhi, Homequest: Liberation with over 400 exciting pages of adventure as opposing sides struggle for freedom and supremacy. T'skya is young, inexperienced and expendable when she is sent to Roumanhi from the Homequest, a vast spaceship that is coming to the end of its functional life; her duty to secure a new home for her people. Heading for a city, she crashes in the desert, only to wake up in an ancient forest on the wrong side of the mountains with a spear in her flesh, surrounded by hostile Roumanhi forest dwellers who think she is an enemy. She soon learns that the dwellers from Wilderwood enclave have good reason to hate and fear the race now dominating their lives. Their families have been split up, their people brutalised and enslaved, their treasured land ravaged and plundered and their monarchy slaughtered. The natives with spears and arrows are no match for the more advanced enemy with their blasters and laser cannon. Eventually T'skya formulates a dangerous plan to secure Roumanhi freedom, endangering those closest to her and leading to revelations that change all their lives. Liberation is a tale of heroic sacrifice, of tragic loss and passionate desire, of ancient races and peculiar creatures, of treasured mythology and warfare.
