I had not ascertained what they were. Q. Had yon made inquiries of Judson for that purpose? A. I had previously made inquiries for that purpose; I did inquire at New York. Q. You say you were to have $1,500 down? A. I shonld have said that that paper was to secure Judson until he could obtain the expenses of the extension. The Court directed the witness to state what Judson said, if any thing. Q. What did Judson say? A. Mr. Judson said he would see the licensees and see that thoy took their licenses under that paper. Q. (By the Court.) See them for what purpose? A. In relation to the $1,500 to be paid down. Q. State what he said about the licensees? A. He stated in substance what the paper stated--that he should go on to New York and see them about the money--the $1,500. Q. Did he state any thing about having seen them prior to that time? A. He did not. Q. You say he said he would go and see them? A. In relation to the other $300, I think it was additional, making $1,500 payable, quarterly. Q. Did he say that he had seen them in relation to the $1,200, or any thing about that? A. He did not. Q. State whether there was any conversation about his having seen them after he left New York, in relation to their coming in and paying the $1,200 a year. A. There was not. Q. Did he tell yon the purpose for which he wanted that paper? was there any thing said about security? A. He told me the purpose was for seeurity, at N. York, and in N. Haven, if I remember right. Q.
