Excerpt from How to Conduct a Church Vacation School This book has grown out of actual experience in promoting, conducting, and supervising Church Vacation Schools. It is written for pastors, Sunday-school workers, and young people who are interested in the religious education of boys and girls and who are anxious to know how to conduct a week-day school during the vacation period. I have had constantly in mind that group of more than a thousand workers (most of whom are volunteers), who are the teachers and helpers in the schools under my supervision each summer. I have sought to answer the questions and meet the problems which they are constantly bringing to me. I have had before me the thousands of boys and girls in our summer schools. I have tried to meet their problems and give concrete suggestions so that they can have a happy and worth-while time in every school. I have been mindful of the numerous letters that come to my desk from all parts of the country asking how to organize and conduct a Vacation School. I have sought to answer their questions and make a book that will be of practical value to those who are interested in this movement. In preparing this book I have had the valuable suggestions which have come out of conference and correspondence with men and women of the leading denominations who are active in these schools. Excerpt from The Community Daily Vacation Bible School This book is not primarily concerned with the Denominational Daily Vacation Bible School but with the community school. Its appeal is especially to the community which has two or more churches and which wishes to conduct a Community Daily Vacation Bible School. Prof. Norman E. Richardson, in his introduction to "The Vacation Religious Day School," by Stafford, says: "If religious training is to be universal for our country, it must be organized and maintained by all the churches acting together. The community is a natural unit in our national life. An adequate program of religious education for a community involves many problems which can be solved only by community co-operation." He also adds: "The program of the vacation session can make use of the prevailing play-spirit without in any way invalidating the educational efficiency of the work. Play is not incompatible with childhood religion." In the dozen or more vacation schools which we have conducted during the past four summers, we have tried to keep before us those two things - the community idea and the play-spirit. We have done many things which the average vacation school does not do and we have left undone many things which many schools have done. Excerpt from The Vacation Religious Day School: Teacher's Manual of Principles and Programs The vacation religious day school has passed the experimental stage. It is now widely recognized as a very useful institution. It can be adapted to the needs of all types of communities. The concept has back of it twenty years of practical experience. Its technique has been developed under the careful study of leaders who are familiar with the philosophy of both general education and religious education. The publication of a volume that adequately sets forth its principles and methods is not only justifiable, it has come to be a practical necessity. Back of the rapidly increasing popularity of the idea of the daily vacation school of religion are the convictions that - First: The Sunday schools, because of their many limitations, cannot carry the full responsibility for the religious training of the children and youth of America. In addition to their highly important work there will be required a substantial program of week-day religious instruction. Second: The responsibility for this week-day religious instruction cannot rest upon the public school boards, but it does rest upon the churches of the community. Third: In view of the constitutional provision for the separation of church and state and of the guarantee of religious freedom to all, week-day religious instruction must be conducted, necessarily, upon a voluntary basis and without the use of public funds. Fourth: The purpose of vacation religious day schools is to instruct the children in fundamental religious values common to all denominations. This instruction will in no way interfere with the work of the Sunday school, but, rather, will strengthen it.
