Excerpt from Hymns and Songs for the Sunday School Hymns and songs for the sunday school is not a classical edition; it is a practical edition, edited for the voice of medium range which predominates in the Sunday school. It is a musical text-book for the church school; it con tains the hymns which the child should study, sing and love. Those marked with an asterisk should be committed to memory. Most of the hymns in the collection are hymns of prayer and praise. A few subjective hymns have been included; these, though their theme is outside of the religious experience of the child, should still have a place in his religious training. Evening hymns have been included because no representative collection is complete without them. The German choral melodies have been arranged for the most part for unison singing. This is not only effective, but also practical, since the alto and tenor parts are often poorly represented in Sunday schools, and are some times entirely lacking. Upon the Sunday school superintendent depends in large measure the useful ness of the book. He should not limit himself to certain tunes or to certain familiar sections. Each hymn has been inserted for a special purpose, and every hymn is meant to be sung. In the Advent season the children should be taught the Advent hymns, and so on through the Church Year. In many cases it will be possible for the superintendent to impart interesting information about the history of a hymn. Schools should be assembled occasionally for practice. A musical drill, following the Sunday school lesson, is not contrary to the spirit of the Sunday school. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Children's Hymns, With Tunes: A Book for Use in the Sunday School The editor's object in compiling this little book has been to make a collection which may to a certain extent become a standard one. In pursuance of this end, no Hymn or Tune (with the exceptions of the eight beautiful tunes written especially for this work by Mr. Arthur E. Johnstone, of one by Mr. Hubert P. Main, and of two or three of those by the editor) has been admitted which has not, by long practical use, proved to be at once pleasing and interesting in character and of sufficiently sterling quality to wear well. Denominational differences have, as much as possible, been avoided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Hymns of the Centuries: Sunday School Edition In the preparation of this hymnal the three-fold purpose has been to meet the devotional, educational, and musical needs of the Sunday-school. The book is based upon the recognition of music as a vital element in religious education, and upon the conviction that only those hymns that have an elevating influence upon the unfolding life Of childhood and youth should find general use in the Sunday-school. In connection with an unusual number of the choicest popular Sunday school hymns Of the present-time, Will be found those important standard hymns of the church with which the children should become familiar While growing up in the Sunday-school. The element Of worship has been recognized by the inclusion Of scripture and music arranged for liturgical use, together with several services topically arranged for special occasions. As a combination book for young people's societies and the prayer meeting it cannot fail to prove both acceptable and adequate, containing, as it does, such a Wide variety of hymns for all purposes of social worship. Excerpt from Carmina for the Sunday School N this volume, a sincere effort has been made to provide a hymnal worthy of and suited to the occasions of Sunday School life. To this end every publication, American and foreign, that promised a reward to faithful search, has been examined. The tunes, new and old, have also been carefully chosen within the range of children's voices, and adapted to the hymns and the character of the service. The design has been to accomplish for the Sunday School, within the limits of hymnals for youth, what has been done for the worship of the greater congregation. Special attention has been given to scriptural hymns, and a larger number of didactic hymns of high character admitted than would be appropriate in a book for adults. A selection has been added for teachers' meetings and Sunday School prayer meetings, which, it is believed, will be welcome.
