Excerpt from Little Masterpieces of English Poetry, Vol. 2: By British and American Authors, Dyls and Stories in Verse This volume of Little Masterpieces of English Poetry contains idyls and stories in verse. It covers a region lying between the ballad, which is almost, if not altogether, objective and imper sonal, and the descriptive and reflective lyric, in which the personal thought and feeling of the poet is the main element. The poems in this volume are marked by a blending of the two elements. They are narratives which have in them some thing oi the reflective and descriptive element. Of course this must not be taken as a hard and fast classification, nor are the divisions within the volume to be so regarded. Many of the poems here have aspects and relations which connect them with the poems in other groups. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Story of Idylls of the King: Adapted From Tennyson, With the Original Poem Writer has been to put the subject matter of the Idylls into readable form for young readers, to lay a foundation, as it were, for Tennyson's tales. They are stories of noble chivalry, courtesy, humanity, friendliness, hardiness, love, friend ship, cowardice, murder, hate, Virtue, and sin. Before reading these tales the young reader should know that King Arthur was a good and wise king who ruled over parts of England in the sixth century. In those days England was divided into a number of petty kingdoms, each ruled by its own king, and Arthur was the wisest and best of these rulers. Indeed, so great was he, that be conquered a large number of his neighbor kings, and finally came to be the ruler of all Western, or Celtic England. He was so chivalrous and kind, so wise and just, that people every where sang his praises. Story aft'er story about him was handed down from one generation to another, until, even before print ing came into use, writers of many lands took him for the highest type of chivalrous gentleman. He was made to stand for all that was good and pure in life, and his name became a household watch word. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Idylls of the King, published between 1859 and 1885, is a cycle of twelve narrative poems by the English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892; Poet Laureate from 1850) which retells the legend of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him, and the rise and fall of Arthur's kingdom. The whole work recounts Arthur's attempt and failure to lift up mankind and create a perfect kingdom, from his coming to power to his death at the hands of the traitor Mordred. Individual poems detail the deeds of various knights, including Lancelot, Geraint, Galahad, and Balin and Balan, and also Merlin and the Lady of the Lake. There is little transition between Idylls, but the central figure of Arthur links all the stories. The poems were dedicated to the late Albert, Prince Consort. The Idylls are written in blank verse. Tennyson's descriptions of nature are derived from observations of his own surroundings, collected over the course of many years. The dramatic narratives are not an epic either in structure or tone, but derive elegiac sadness in the style of the idylls of Theocritus. Idylls of the King is often read as an allegory of the societal conflicts in Britain during the mid-Victorian era.
