The state bounds politics: it constructs and enforces boundaries that separate what it controls from what lies outside its domain. However, states face a variety of threats that cross and challenge their geographical and conceptual boundaries. Transnational violent actors that transcend these boundaries also defy the state’s claims to political authority and legitimacy. Mark Shirk examines historical and contemporary state responses to transnational violence to develop a new account of the making of global orders. He considers a series of crises that plagued the state system in different eras: golden-age piracy in the eighteenth century, anarchist “propagandists of the deed” at the turn of the twentieth, and al-Qaeda in recent years. Shirk argues that states redraw conceptual boundaries, such as between “international” and “domestic,” to make sense of and defeat transnational threats. In response to forms of political violence that challenged boundaries, states developed creative responses that included new forms of control, surveillance, and rights. As a result, these responses gradually made and transformed the state and global order. Shirk draws on extensive archival research and interviews with policy makers and experts, and he explores the implications for understandings of state formation. Combining rich detail and theoretical insight, Making War on the World reveals the role of pirates, anarchists, and terrorists in shaping global order.

This is the story of Yvonne Wilson, an accountant, and Oliver, a grossly overweight black-and-white tuxedo cat. Yvonne witnesses an execution-style murder of three people. Even with limited police protection and the promise of being put in the witness protection program, Yvonne fully realizes that MS-13 gang members or the mob are going to kill her. The mob has hired MS-13 gang members to expedite the matter. After believing that she is in a hopeless dilemma, Yvonne notices a huge black-and-white tuxedo cat that has just appeared in her living room. He is a talking cat named Oliver. Oliver explains that he was sent from heaven to protect Yvonne from the MS-13 gang members and the mob. He assures her that the mob/MS-13 cannot harm her. He will protect her until she dies a natural death. Yvonne soon realizes that Oliver can back up what he says. He has supernatural powers. He is omniscient (all-knowing), omnipotent (all-powerful), omnipresent (can be in more than one place at the same time), and clairvoyant (can see into the future). Oliver is here for the duration. He will never leave her. After a while, Yvonne and Oliver grow on each other. They become inseparable. The story is full of love, and there is a human and feline bonding. Yvonne often shoots it out with MS-13 gang members and mobsters. Although close to a deity, Oliver does have some faults. He is always on a thin line between being a law officer and an outlaw. After he becomes an FBI agent, he takes some of his salary and donates the rest to charity. When he is short of cash, he prints $100 bills in Yvonne's basement. Since the bills are real, he can't be accused of counterfeiting.

New York Times Bestseller A New York Times Notable Book The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Seveneves, Anathem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon returns with a wildly inventive and entertaining science fiction thriller—Paradise Lost by way of Philip K. Dick—that unfolds in the near future, in parallel worlds. In his youth, Richard “Dodge” Forthrast founded Corporation 9592, a gaming company that made him a multibillionaire. Now in his middle years, Dodge appreciates his comfortable, unencumbered life, managing his myriad business interests, and spending time with his beloved niece Zula and her young daughter, Sophia. One beautiful autumn day, while he undergoes a routine medical procedure, something goes irrevocably wrong. Dodge is pronounced brain dead and put on life support, leaving his stunned family and close friends with difficult decisions. Long ago, when a much younger Dodge drew up his will, he directed that his body be given to a cryonics company now owned by enigmatic tech entrepreneur Elmo Shepherd. Legally bound to follow the directive despite their misgivings, Dodge’s family has his brain scanned and its data structures uploaded and stored in the cloud, until it can eventually be revived. In the coming years, technology allows Dodge’s brain to be turned back on. It is an achievement that is nothing less than the disruption of death itself. An eternal afterlife—the Bitworld—is created, in which humans continue to exist as digital souls. But this brave new immortal world is not the Utopia it might first seem . . . Fall, or Dodge in Hell is pure, unadulterated fun: a grand drama of analog and digital, man and machine, angels and demons, gods and followers, the finite and the eternal. In this exhilarating epic, Neal Stephenson raises profound existential questions and touches on the revolutionary breakthroughs that are transforming our future. Combining the technological, philosophical, and spiritual in one grand myth, he delivers a mind-blowing speculative literary saga for the modern age.

When an overworked influencer makes a drunken decision that ends up with her married to the one night stand that never-should-have-been just in time for Christmas…things are about to get cuffed. Maxima Prewitt is overworked, overtired, and probably flirting with burnout. The last thing she needs is to deal with the constant (rarely) good-natured ribbing she gets from her parents during the holidays about being perpetually single. Operation Get Max a Christmas Date is in full effect. After a night of too many drinks and one terribly made decision, Max finds herself married to a heartbreaker like Logan Porter. She would rather run in the other direction than date him, let alone call him her husband. With Christmas coming around the corner, Max is looking at the silver lining – she now has a date for Christmas family dinner and she might survive virtually unscathed. When the two get caught in a city-wide blackout and are forced together, they both need more than a little Christmas spirit to make them see eye-to-eye. As the cold seeps in and food runs scarce, Max can begin to see the side that Logan was showing her all along, the side she didn’t want to see. With Christmas looming closer and closer, Max has to make one final decision – get an annulment or announce that she’s tied the knot in front of the entire family. Cuffing season is about to get a sprinkling of Christmas magic. Cuffing season (n.): the period between October and Valentine’s Day where single people tend to look for short-term relationships for colder months of the year before breaking up in time for the spring. In the heat of the Korean War, Allied forces have a problem: the North Korean army is using a network of old Japanese tunnels to run military operations against the South, with near impunity. Now, the U.S. military will turn to an elite, highly trained and fearless group of men to find out where these tunnels lie-and destroy them once and for all.The Hills Went Boom!, from Korean War veteran Hank Acker, follows this newly formed reconnaissance unit-consisting of 11 U.S. Marines and one U.S. Navy corpsman-as they prepare to airdrop into hostile territory in three separate and dangerous missions. The men couldnt be more different, with varied backgrounds, interests and skills. But in the process, theyll learn to rely on each other in ways they never thought possible-and form a kind of bond only known to those who have served their country under the most difficult circumstances. And with one final and most challenging directive to complete, theyll need every bit of support they can muster...Fast-paced, frankly realistic and action-packed, The Hills Went Boom! is a unique glimpse into men whose honor, determination and sheer guts has one objective: to serve their country. Hoorah!
