Like many small and developing nation, Bhutan imports large proportion of its food supplies. In order for Bhutan to develop an effective imported food control system, the country situation analysis has been conducted to capture accurately the existing national imported food control situation in Bhutan. The key findings included: 1) Bhutan does not implement systematic and science-based import inspection and certification currently, except for few selected food commodities presenting high biosecurity risk; 2) key legislations and other important guidelines, permits, certificates, SOPs related to imported food control have been developed, but are yet to be implemented fully; 3) infrastructure at official border points needs to be strengthened to implement imported food control system effectively; 4) staff needs to be trained to implement import inspection and certification; and 5) an integrated database on food quality and safety surveillance, and import and export inspection and certification need to be developed to generate data for risk assessment and risk categorization. Detailed findings and priority recommended actions plans are documented in this report to strengthen imported food control in Bhutan taking the One Health approach.

Aid for Trade came to prominence just over a decade ago at the launch of the World Trade Organization's Doha Round. With its focus on helping least developed countries and economies escape the poverty trap, it aims to strengthen their capabilities to meet market demand and to reduce supply-side constraints such as a lack of trade infrastructure. In accordance with that objective, this report lays out an applied framework for prioritizing potential trade-related interventions and investments according to the expected strength of their combined economic impacts. Along the way, and for the first time, the economic geography of northeastern South Asia has been comprehensively mapped. Computer-driven modeling provides a dynamic portrayal of the economic geography that is a resource for decision makers (and investors). By bringing to light new avenues yielding very high economic benefits for investment and reforms, the framework can give guidance for undertaking trade improvements under Aid for Trade on pilot projects within a national setting, between neighbors or spread to partners further afield. In all cases, the endeavor is the same: expressed in the metaphor of hard investment, it is to build bridges to export markets so that people in the economic periphery have a better opportunity to take poverty off their own maps.

In 2008, the Codex Alimentarius members agreed that it is important for countries to globally share the results of genetically modified (GM) food safety assessment and subsequently the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is hosting an online database entitled FAO GM Foods Platform (http://www.fao.org/gm-platform) to share the relevant data. As of September 2019, only 23 out of 189 Codex members have been able to share the relevant data. In order to understand the challenges countries may be facing in conducting GM food safety assessment, two separate sets of questionnaires were sent to all 189 Codex members in July 2019. Questionnaire A was sent to 166 Codex members who had not shared any GM food safety assessment result on the platform, while questionnaire B was sent to those 23 Codex members who have been actively sharing the GM food safety assessment results on the Platform. A total of 116 Codex members responded between July and September 2019. All responses are recorded as they were received. While the present document is a simple compilation of the responses, a complete analysis of the results was made and integrated in to another FAO publication entitled Reality of GM food safety: Are we effectively evaluating it?
