Ethna Carbery (born Anna Johnston, 3 December 1866 - 21 April 1902) was an Irish journalist, writer and poet. She is best-known for the ballad Roddy McCorley and the Song of Ciabhn. Along with Alice Milligan she published two Irish nationalist magazines. In 1900 she was a founding member of Inghinidhe na hireann, the revolutionary women's organisation led by Maud Gonne. In 1901, she married poet and folklorist Samus MacManus (1869-1960), and then took the pen name Ethna Carbery, to avoid confusion with her husband (also a writer). Sadly, she died a year after their marriage due to gastritis. Some of her work, including this collection, was published posthumously by her husband.Much of her poetry and writing had to do with Ireland's epic past, including the selections in this edition of In the Celtic Past.

Excerpt from In the Celtic Past The harper rose, flushing red because Of the reproof, and vouchsafed a reply. It was the death-lament for Conor the King we sang, my honoured lord, and inasmuch as he hath died but a short time since, we feared you sorrowed for him in silence. And because our battle-strains or strains of love have been powerless to win you from your grief, in our affection we have fallen in with this mood, and have joined in your regrets. The death he died was a strange one, and unknown in all the annals of the land. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
