In this third part of the Silver Lion narrative, we find Kara Ben Nemsi and Halef starting out on yet another exciting journey, this time in the Persian city of Basra. Ready to take on new adventures, they not only encounter an old friend of theirs, but also yet another member of the 'Shadows', an arcane cult involved in organized crime in the region. Through subterfuge our heroes are able to obtain a mysterious letter from this man. As Kara and Halef leave Basra, they realize that they might have left the disease-ridden city too late. Despite the clean mountain air, Halef is beginning to show signs of sickness, and even Kara is beginning to make mistakes. Will our heroes be able to recover, and what additional adventures will they experience?

The first half of In the Realm of the Silver Lion I describes Old Shatterhand's adventures meant to follow the events described in Winnetou III. After his best friend's death, our hero is so deeply depressed and unkempt, that initially he isn't even recognized as Old Shatterhand by The Two Snuffles, two Men of the West he meets along his way to the Apache tribe. Together they meet the mysterious Persian nobleman Jafar and repeatedly rescue him from the clutches of hostile Comanche Indians. The adventure continues several years later in Persia, where Old Shatterhand's alter ego Kara Ben Nemsi undertakes multiple journeys with his friend Hajji Halef Omar. Together they slay the Lion of Blood Vengeance, cross paths with an arcane cult called 'The Shadows', and reconnect with an old friend of theirs, the Polish expatriate Dozorca, who tells them the heart-wrenching story of how he lost his family. Kara Ben Nemsi gives him new hope, but will he and Halef be able to help him find his loved ones again?

In Ruderal City Bettina Stoetzer traces relationships among people, plants, and animals in contemporary Berlin as they make their lives in the ruins of European nationalism and capitalism. She develops the notion of the ruderal—originally an ecological designation for the unruly life that inhabits inhospitable environments such as rubble, roadsides, train tracks, and sidewalk cracks—to theorize Berlin as a “ruderal city.” Stoetzer explores sites in and around Berlin that have figured in German national imaginaries—gardens, forests, parks, and rubble fields—to show how racial, class, and gender inequalities shape contestations over today’s uses and knowledges of urban nature. Drawing on fieldwork with gardeners, botanists, migrant workers, refugees, public officials, and nature enthusiasts while charting human and more-than-human worlds, Stoetzer offers a wide-ranging ethnographic portrait of Berlin’s postwar ecologies that reveals emergent futures in the margins of European cities. Brimming with stories that break down divides between environmental perspectives and the study of migration and racial politics, Berlin’s ruderal worlds help us rethink the space of nature and culture and the categories through which we make sense of urban life in inhospitable times.

Heritage of Our Times is a brilliant examination of modern culture and its legacy by one of the most important and deeply influential thinkers of the 20th century. Bloch argues that the key elements of a genuine cultural tradition are not just to be found in the conveniently closed and neatly labeled ages of the past, but also in the open and experimental cultural process of our time. One of the most compelling aspects of this work is a contemporary analysis of the rise of Nazism. It probes its bogus roots in German history and mythology at the very moment when the ideologies of Blood and Soil and the Blond Beast were actually taking hold of the German people. The breadth and depth of Bloch's vision, together with the rich diversity of his interest, ensure this work a place as one of the key books of the 20th century.
