Excerpt from Index Catalogue of the Scranton Public Library: Authors and Subjects, June 30, 1902 An Author List, that of August 1894, was the last previous printed catalog Of this library, which then contained a total of volumes. The whole number of volumes in the library June 30, 1902, the date of last inclusions in the present undertaking, was divided as stated above. Accessions since then are shown in a quarterly bulletin which, printed in a similar style, is expected to serve in some measure as a supplement to this catalog. Those who make use of the present volume should first of all understand that the references contained in it relate mostly to entire books of an author, or else to complete works treating upon a given subject. For other details, and additional information regarding any topic, readers should refer to the dictionary card catalog at the library. That catalog constitutes the only full, complete, and uprto - date key to the entire library. Among the more than cards contained in its drawers will be found numerous analytical and minor references, together with various title entries. Necessarily omitted in this printed form. It was recognized, further, that a due regard to convenience in the use Of this work called for restriction in bulk quite as much as for desirable effectiveness in its contents. In compliance with those requirements concise brevity became the governing rule, so far as deemed compatible with the amount Of information to be conveyed. Hence the omission of bibliographical particulars, and the adoption of other measures tending to condensation and economy of space. By means of variation in type and indention, a clear distinction between author and subject entries has been sought, while including them in one alphabetical series. The name of each author has been given in a form that will suffice to identify him or her; and the surname set in blackface (antique) type. In case of anonymous books, or those without known author or editor, the first word not an article has been made the catch-word for their entry, and also placed in blackface. But title-entries proper have not otherwise been made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
