Excerpt from Mission Work Among the Negroes and the Indians: What Is Being Accomplished by Means of the Annual Collection Taken Up for Our Missions, 1915 It is withthe utmost confidence that we once again appeal to your generosity in behalf Of the Negro and Indian Missions. Each recurring year gives evidence Of your zeal for those needy portions Of the Lord's Vineyard, and your charity in the past is a presage Of your future efforts. Blessed as has been the Church in this, country, we feel that a most urgent duty rests upon us Of furthering Christ's King dom and Of bringing light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow Of death. Upon us who are Of the household of Faith rests the burden Of spreading the Gospel among our less fortunate brethren and that burden rests, not upon any individual or society, but upon the entire Catholic Church in the United States. At our very doors millions Of souls are crying for the bread Of life. Thiey are in our midst and we cannot be deaf or indifferent to their cries. There is no more glorious work than that Of spreading Christ's name and in that work all may have a share. Excerpt from Days of Grace in India: A Record of Visits to Indian Missions In recording visit to some of the Mission Stations of India, my aim has not been to compile a Missionary Directory, but to afford an insight into some of the various phases of the work. I have endeavoured to suggest some of the lines of thought and of national habit, which the missionary has to deal with in India, in order that the churches at home may be able to sympathize more fully with the workers abroad, and be able to realize the progress that has been made, and how much remains to be accomplished. While apologizing for any errors that may inadvertently have occurred, I would gratefully acknowledge my obligations to the writings of Max Muller and Monier Williams, the Church Missionary Atlas, Badley's Indian Missionary Directory, and other works that deal with Hindu thought and with missionary enterprise, and I must also express my gratitude for the uniform kindness and welcome I received from missionaries of all Societies in India, and for the courteous assistance rendered by the Secretaries of committees at home. If the following narrative of the Lord's work in India contributes to deepen interest in the work of Christian Missions, and serve as a witness to the power of the Gospel, my object will be accomplished. Excerpt from Glimpses of India and of Mission Life The future of India is as bright as prophecy and promise, and as sure as the Father's gift to His Son. But before the perfect day of India's salvation has come, the Church must continue the work of faith, the labour of love, and submit to the patience of hope. Many of her best sons must be sent to India and buried there. Much more wealth must be expended there. The spirit of the Cross must be more deeply felt, and its grand law of self-denial be more fully exercised. We commend this little book to the friends of Missions, and invoke upon its story the blessing of Jesus, the world's great Missionary.
