In the last 25 years, the science and technology of composite materials have experienced a period of substantial development. Composite materials have been introduced, or are expected to serve, in many functions which cannot be fulfilled by conventional materials, particularly in extreme environments. The research focus has been broadened to include not only new polymer system, but also metal matrix composites, intermetallic compounds and ceramic materials. This has brought forth a number of new problems in fabrication and processing, and in analysis of composite material behavior and properties. Under these circumstances, it fs essential to develop micromechanical theories which evaluate the local fields and predict the overall response under combined thermal and mechanical loads. The basic elements of these theories are geometrical modeling of the microstructures and local interactions, and constitutive modeling of the homogeneous phases. An essential requirement of the latter is to include inelastic deformation to model composite systems which exhibit nonlinear response under thermal and mechanical service loads. Since the early 1960s, micromechanics of composite materials has attracted many researchers. The Building Block Approach ensures that cost and performance objectives are met by testing greater numbers of smaller, less expensive specimens. In this way, technology risks are assessed early in the program. In addition, the knowledge acquired at a given level of structural complexity is built up before progressing to a level of increased complexity. Achieving substantiation of structural performance by testing alone can be p- hibitively expensive because of the number of specimens and components required to characterize all material systems, loading scenarios and boundary conditions. Building Block Approachprogramscan achieve signi?cant cost reductionsby se- ing a synergy between testing and analysis. The more the development relies on analysis, the less expensive it becomes.
