Over the last 30 years, Dr. Nikita V. Chukanov has collected IR spectra of about 2000 mineral species, including 247 holotype samples. In this book, he presents 3309 spectra of these minerals with detailed description and analytical data for reference samples. In the course of this work, about 150 new mineral species have been discovered. After an introductory chapter, infrared spectra of minerals are given together with the descriptions of standard samples used (occurrence, appearance, associated minerals, empirical formula etc.) and some comments. Sections are organized according to different classes of compounds (silicates, phosphates, arsenates, oxides etc.).

The infrared absorption and reflection in a crystal due to the interaction of the incident electromagnetic field with its vibrational modes are described in this article. The concept of normal vibrations of a crystal is introduced by the example of a linear chain, and then is generalized to more complex 3-dimensional crystals. Methods of classifying unit cell modes by means of factor and site group analyses are pointed out. Dispersion of infrared radiation by an ionic crystal producing the reststrahlen spectrum is treated next, followed by the method of determination of optical constants from such a spectrum and also from attenuated total reflection and emission spectra. The role of vector k not equal 0 modes, where k = 2 pi/lambda represents the wave vector, in the interaction of more than one vibrational mode with the incident photon resulting in combination and overtone bands is discussed. Special emphasis is given on the optically active multiphonon processes in simple crystals. Examples are furnished by a discussion of the lattice infrared spectrum of AlSb followed by a comprehensive review of the multiphonon infrared absorption in diatomic cubic crystals. Infrared spectra of gypsum, CaSO4 2H2O and solid cyclopropane single crystals are described next as examples of more complex crystals. (Author).

Studies were carried out to characterize and explain the infrared absorption and reflectance spectra of molecular crystals. Accurate methods of measuring reflectance spectra and of processing the data to obtain optical constants were developed and applied to sodium chlorate. Absolute infrared absorption intensities were measured for ethylenes, benzenes, acetylene and ethane. Theoretical studies of crystal splitting and lattice frequencies in benzene have provided data concerning intermolecular forces in this crystal splitting of ungerade vibrations, and provide the restoring force for torsional lattice motion. Phase changes in adamantane, cyclohexane and hexamethylbenzene were studied. Spectroscopically observable changes occuring at the phase transition temperature yield information concerning the molecular motions. Crystal spectra were used to aid in vibrational assignment of hydrazoic acid and cyclohexane. The unique properties of the crystal spectrum were of critical value in each case. (Author).

This book provides an overview of the application of IR spectroscopy in mineralogical investigations, as well as modern trends in the IR spectroscopy of minerals. It includes the most important methodological aspects; characteristic IR bands of different chemical groups and coordination polyhedra; application of IR spectroscopy to the investigation of the crystal chemistry of amphiboles, phyllosilicates, tourmalines etc.; neutral molecules entrapped by microporous minerals; and analysis of hydrogen in nominally anhydrous minerals. About 1600 IR spectra (illustrations as well as a list of wavenumbers) of minerals and some related compounds are accompanied by detailed descriptions of the standard samples used. Each spectrum provides information about the occurrence, appearance, associated minerals, its empirical formula, and unit-cell parameters. The book also provides insights into sample preparation and/or spectrum registration methods. It includes IR spectra of 1020 minerals that were not covered in the book “Infrared spectra of mineral species: Extended library” published in 2014 and written by one of the authors. On average, each page provides information on two minerals/compounds. Subsections correspond to different classes of compounds (silicates, phosphates, arsenates, oxides etc.). About 290 new spectra have been obtained, and the remaining 1310 spectra are taken from most reliable literature sources (published over the last 60 years) and are redrawn in a unified style.
