Although scholars point to similarities between Sirach and the book of Proverbs and sometimes characterize Ben Sira's relationship to biblical poetry as one of imitation (often unsuccessful imitation), this study considers the innovative and unique aspects of Sirach poetry, especially its use of parallelism, and demonstrates that Ben Sira does not rely exclusively on Proverbs or any other biblical book as a model. "Innovations in Hebrew Poetry" provides detailed readings and philological analysis for the nine poems in the Masada scroll, and general observations on many other Sirach and biblical poems complement the analysis. Paperback edition is available from the Society of Biblical Literature (www.sbl-site.org)

Here is a convenient introduction to the unique aspects of interpreting the one-third of the Hebrew Bible that is in poetic form. Numerous are the occasions when a failure to distinguish poetry from prose in the Old Testament has resulted in flawed interpretation. Robert Lowth's Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews (1753, 1787), marked a turning point of major proportions by focusing on the importance of parallelism of lines. But new studies of the past decade now require significant adjustments to Lowth's analyses. Interpreting Hebrew Poetry offers an authoritative introduction to this discussion of parallelism, meter and rhythm, and poetic style. It also provides by way of example a poetic analysis of Deuteronomy 32, Isaiah 5:1-7, and Psalm 1.

David Fogel is undoubtedly the harbinger of modernism in Hebrew poetry. While other Hebrew poets wrote their poems in systematically measured rhythm, rigid rhyme, and metrical patterns, establishing and aesthetically sculpting "celebrated," symbolic themes, the poetry of David Fogel introduced a novel, innovative trend in Hebrew poetry. Accordingly, his poems are presented in a low-key rhythm of conversational Hebrew. Fogel's poetry introduced a new poetic option in Hebrew poetry, one that replaced the proclivity of "fireworks" with a serene, whispering tone. Topics are somber and subdued, the atmosphere in his poetry is bleak and murky, while quietly refraining from blatant complaint. Fogel is a poet of doom and gloom, while expressing the latter in the most moving fashion of acceptance and surrender. David Fogel tragically perished in the Holocaust in 1944. This anthology contains 75 of David Fogel's poems, translated by the author. "David Fogel's 'ars poetica' distinguishes itself with poetic beauty that had not been introduced, practiced, and displayed yet in modern Hebrew poetry. Undoubtedly, David Fogel's somber, Gothic atmosphere, subdued, melancholic tone, naturally fluent rhythm and meter, and 'mutely' practiced rhyme, topics and ideas are devoid of flowery symbolism. Prof. Yair Mazor's aesthetic probe into David Fogel's art of poetry analyzes meticulously and lucidly the David Fogel's poetic art. Hence, Prof. Mazor's study of David Fogel's poetry enables the readers to appreciate and even admire the poetry of David Fogel from the very depth of its artistic depth to its panoramic, breathtaking view point." -Professor Moshe Pelli, Director & Abe and Tess Wise Endowed Professor of Judaic Studies Interdisciplinary Program in Judaic Studies, University of Central Florida

In spite of debatable issues, such as metre, we now know enough about classical Hebrew poetry to be able to understand how it was composed. This large-scale manual, rich in detail, exegesis and bibliography, provides guidelines for the analysis and appreciation of Hebrew verse. Topics include oral poetry, metre, parallelism and forms of the strophe and stanza. Sound patterns and imagery are also discussed. A lengthy chapter sets out a whole range of other poetic devices and the book closes with a set of worked examples of Hebrew poetry. Throughout, other ancient Semitic verse has been used for comparison and the principles of modern literary criticism have been applied.

This volume explores the language and poetic structure of the seven non-Masoretic poems preserved in the Dead Sea Scroll labeled 11Q5 or 11QPsa. It presents fresh readings of the Hebrew poems, which were last studied intensively almost fifty years ago, stressing their structural and conceptual coherence and incorporating insights gained from the scholarship of recent decades. Each chapter addresses a single poem and describes its poetic structure, including its use of parallelism and allusion to scripture, as well as specific problems related to the poem's interpretation. In addition, the book considers these poems in relation to what they reveal about the development of Hebrew poetry in the late Second Temple period.

Comprised of contributions from leading international scholars, The Routledge Handbook of Arabic Poetry incorporates political, cultural, and theoretical paradigms that help place poetic projects in their socio-political contexts as well as illuminate connections across the continuum of the Arabic tradition. This volume grounds itself in the present moment and, from it, examines the transformations of the fifteen-century Arabic poetic tradition through readings, re-readings, translations, reformulations, and co-optations. Furthermore, this collection aims to deconstruct the artificial modern/pre-modern divide and to present the Arabic poetic practice as live and urgent, shaped by the experiences and challenges of the twenty-first century and at the same time in constant conversation with its long tradition. The Routledge Handbook of Arabic Poetry actively seeks to destabilize binaries such as that of East-West in contributions that shed light on the interactions of the Arabic tradition with other Middle Eastern traditions, such as Persian, Turkish, and Hebrew, and on South-South ideological and poetic networks of solidarity that have informed poetic currents across the modern Middle East. This volume will be ideal for scholars and students of Arabic, Middle Eastern, and comparative literature, as well as non-specialists interested in poetry and in the present moment of the study of Arabic poetry.
