This book explores microbial lifestyles, biochemical adaptations, and trophic interactions occurring in extreme environments. By summarizing the latest findings in the field it provides a valuable reference for future studies. Spark ideas for biotechnological and commercial exploitation of microbiomes at the extremes of life are presented. Chapters on viruses complement this highly informative book. In a vertical journey through the microbial biosphere it covers aspects of cold environments, hot environments, extreme saline environments, and extreme pressure environments, and more. From the deep sea, through polar deserts, up to the clouds in the air - the diversity of microbial life in all habitats is described, explored, and comprehensively reviewed. Possible biotechnical applications are discussed. This book aims to provide a useful reference for those who want to start a research program in extreme microbiology and, hopefully, inspire new research directions.

Both municipal engineering and environmental engineering are disciplines aimed at promoting human welfare. The former focuses on establishing life-supporting public infrastructure, while the latter emphasizes treatment and restoration of polluted environment. Typically, the engineers deal with various contaminants (e.g., nutrients, heavy metals and organic contaminants) existing in different environmental media (e.g., soils, water sources, sewage and solid wastes). So far, plenty of technologies and engineering systems have been developed in which microorganisms play important parts. In some cases, microorganisms play a leading role, as their metabolism influences the degradation and transformation of the contaminants. In other cases, as a part of the target environments, microbial communities are forced to change, which reflects the performance of the applied technologies/systems or their impacts on the health of ecosystems and living organisms.

This book focuses on the diversity and biotechnological applications of metabolites produced by extremophilic microbes thriving in different ecological niches citing the low troposphere, the gastrointestinal tract of ruminants, tropical dry forest, and saline ecosystems. These studies were based on metabolomics and molecular approaches like metagenomics and single-cell genomic analyses. Various implications of Electro-Rheological Fluid are also discussed. The editor embarked on this writing project entitled “Extremophilic Microbes and Metabolites - Diversity, Bioprospecting, and Biotechnological Applications” to make pertinent contributions accessible to the scientific community. Hopefully, a large audience will benefit from the chapters of this book.

Microbial Diversity in Hotspots provides an introduction to microbial diversity and microbes in different hotspots and threatened areas. The book gives insights on extremophiles, phyllosphere and rhizosphere, covers fungal diversity, conservation and microbial association, focuses on biodiversity acts and policies, and includes cases studies. Microbes explored are from the coldest to the hottest areas of the world. Although hotspots are zones with extremely high microbiology activities, the knowledge of microbial diversity from these areas is very limited, hence this is a welcome addition to existing resources. Provides an introduction to microbial biotechnology Addresses novel approaches to the study of microbial diversity in hotspots Provides the basics, along with advanced information on microbial diversity Discusses the techniques used to examine microbial diversity with their applications and respective pros and cons for sustainability Explores the importance of microbial genomes studies in commercial applications
