This book provides a methodology for developing an optimum investment strategy in the heating and combined heat and power (CHP) industry. It demonstrates how to apply mathematical models to the analysis of heat and electricity source operation from technical and economic perspectives. It also allows readers to ascertain the economic effectiveness of modernizing an existing CHP plant. The mathematical models presented are designed to recognize identity profits in continuous time so that they can be better predicted. The authors examine the operational costs of a CHP plant and the impact of factors, such as environmental costs, associated with investment in the heating and CHP sector to enable readers to select the most appropriate technologies. It presents a state-of-the-art technical and economic analysis to enhance readers’ understanding of investment in and optimization of heating and CHP, and provides practical guidance for investors’ decision-making. The book is a valuable source of information, making it ideal for financial analysts and power engineers. Thanks to its in-depth analysis of mathematical methods, it is also suitable for students and researchers with an interest in investment strategy.

Utilities across the country could use highly efficient combined heat and power (CHP) to more cheaply replace a substantial portion of the coal-fired electric-generating capacity expected to retire in the near term. CHP systems use a single fuel source to concurrently produce electricity and thermal energy. Heat is a byproduct of most electricity generation--but while traditional power plants waste that heat by releasing it into the air or nearby water, CHP systems capture it and put it to productive use, such as generating steam that is then used in manufacturing processes. ACEEE's report analyzes the potential for new CHP at energy-intensive industrial and commercial facilities, and finds that by encouraging utilities to invest in CHP on customer sites, states could more easily meet future demand and offset some or all of the need to invest in new expensive power plants.

PETROLEUM REFINING This fourth volume in the Petroleum Refining set, this book continues the most up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of the most significant and recent changes to petroleum refining, presenting the state-of-the-art to the engineer, scientist, or student. This book provides the design of heat exchanger equipment, crude oil fouling in pre-heat train exchangers, crude oil fouling models, fouling mitigation and monitoring, prevention and control of liquid and gas side fouling, using the Excel spreadsheet and UniSim design software for the design of shell and tube heat exchangers, double pipe heat exchangers, air-cooled exchangers, heat loss tracing for process piping, pinch analysis for hot and cold utility targets and process safety incidents involving these equipment items and pertinent industrial case studies. Use of UniSim Design (UniSim STE) software is illustrated in further elucidation of the design of shell and tube heat exchangers, condensers, and UniSim ExchangerNet R470 for the design of heat exchanger networks using pinch analysis. This is important for determining minimum cold and hot utility requirements, composite curves of hot and cold streams, the grand composite curve, the heat exchanger network, and the relationship between operating cost index target and the capital cost index target against ΔTmin. Useful as a textbook, this is also an excellent, handy go-to reference for the veteran engineer, a volume no chemical or process engineering library should be without. Written by one of the world’s foremost authorities, this book sets the standard for the industry and is an integral part of the petroleum refining renaissance. It is truly a must-have for any practicing engineer or student in this area. This groundbreaking new volume: Assists engineers in rapidly analyzing problems and finding effective design methods and select mechanical specifications Provides improved design manuals to methods and proven fundamentals of process design with related data and charts Covers a complete range of basic day–to–day petroleum refining operations topics with new materials on significant industry changes Extensive Excel spreadsheets for the design of process vessels for mechanical separation of two-phase and three-phase fluids, double-pipe heat exchanger, air-cooled exchanger, pinch analysis for hot and cold utility targets. Provides UniSim ®-based case studies for enabling simulation of key processes outlined in the book Helps achieve optimum operations and process conditions and shows how to translate design fundamentals into mechanical equipment specifications Has a related website that includes computer applications along with spreadsheets and concise applied process design flow charts and process data sheets Provides various case studies of process safety incidents in refineries and means of mitigating these from investigations by the US Chemical Safety Board Includes a vast Glossary of Petroleum and Technical Terminology

This book presents a thermodynamic and economic analysis of gas-gas systems in power plants, including combined heat and power systems, combined cooling, heat and power systems, hydrogen production facilities and compressed energy storage system. A configuration for high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactor is also used as a heat source for the cycle. The book compares different technologies, such as gas-steam and gas-gas systems, using optimized cases. It presents mathematical models that return optimal thermodynamic parameters of the cycles, and applies a novel continuous-time model in order to perform an economic analysis as well. This book utilizes numerous illustrations and worked examples to thoroughly explain the technologies discussed, making it relevant for researchers, market analysts, decision makers, power engineers and students alike.

The UK faces a threefold energy challenge: how to keep the lights on, at affordable prices while moving towards a sustainable low-carbon future. The Government believes that the best way to meet these goals is with a competitive, diverse, low carbon energy mix. Gas currently forms an integral part of the UK's generation mix and is a reliable, flexible source of electricity. Using gas as fuel in UK power stations currently provides a significant proportion of the country's electricity generation (around 40% in 2011). The Government expects gas to continue to play a major role in the electricity mix over the coming decades, alongside low-carbon technologies. Gas is also the cleanest fossil fuel and will have a key role in decarbonising the UK's economy. Also gas-fired power stations are relatively cheap and quick to build, and investment in new gas plants will offer employment opportunities throughout the country. The strategy is divided into 7 chapters: Chapter 1: Current role of gas generation; 2: Future role of gas generation; 3: Enabling investment in gas generation; 4: Ensuring secure and affordable gas supply; 5: Developing shale resources; 6: Carbon capture and storage; 7: Next steps.
