The Black Shirts were sent to the Eastern Front to constitute the ideological spearhead of the struggle between fascism and Soviet communism: summed up by Mussolini with the slogan: Or Rome or Moscow. After the good results obtained in 1941 by the 63rd Tagliamento Legion, other units were sent to Russia in the course of 1942 coming to form the Groupings 3 Gennaio and 23 Marzo, which were practically two brigades that, together with the Croatian Legion of MVSN, distinguished themselves during the advance towards Don and Volga and during the defensive battles of summer-winter 1942, and that suffered heavy losses during the Italian retreat of winter 1942-43.

‘Panzersoldaten!’ is a history of the Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale (MVSN), commonly referred to as the Blackshirts due to their wartime attire. They were an anti-Communist paramilitary organisation that fought for Mussolini while Italy was under fascist rule; following the Duce’s removal from power, the organisation was quickly swept up by the Italian Army, and forced to swear allegiance to the king. Italian relations with the occupied populations of the Soviet Union between 1941 and 1943 were considerably better than those of their German ally. In explaining this discrepancy, this thesis discards stereotypical notions of a humanitarian Italian national character, arguing that a more complex interplay of tangible factors informed the behaviour of Italian troops in the east. While Italian forces occupied large territories, the Germans dictated policy and did not request Italian participation in harsh policies such as the Holocaust or forced labour deportations. Alongside presenting the war as an ideological crusade to eradicate Bolshevism, Fascist propaganda idealized the role of Italian soldiers as liberators of the Soviet peoples from Communism. Because Italian forces were deployed in regions unsuited to guerrilla warfare, they faced little partisan threat to dissuade them from their sympathy for civilians. Italians were capable of brutality, but circumstances kept it in check.

This monograph presents a view on grammaticalisation radically different from standard views centering around the cline of grammaticality. Grammar is seen as a complex sign system, and, as a consequence, grammatical change always comprises semantic change. What unites morphology, topology (word order), constructional syntax and other grammatical subsystems is their paradigmatic organisation. The traditional concept of an inflexional paradigm is generalised as the structuring principle of grammar.
