Excerpt from John Wesley and the Religious Societies In writing this book, I have kept the Methodist Church in view. My eyes have been fixed on John Wesley and the England in which his greatest work was done. We can never understand the revival of religion which glorified the eighteenth century until we see Wesley as he was, and get rid of the false impressions created by writers who have had an imperfect acquaintance with him and his evangelistic work. It is impossible for me, in this place, to express my obliga tions to all those who have helped me to write this book. I am deeply in their debt. While acknowledging my indebted ness to those who have preceded me in the study of Methodist history, I must make special reference to the editor and the annotators of the Standard Edition of The journal of john Wesley. That book has been my constant guide. I am also indebted to my fellow-workers of the Wesley Historical Society for the kindly light they have shed on many difficulties. The Publications and the Proceedings of the Society have been invaluable. To Mr. Arthur Wallington, who has read the proofs, and to the Rev. John Elsworth, who has compiled the Index, my special thanks are due. J. S. S. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from John Wesley and the Methodist Societies IN my book on john Wesley and the Religious Societies I have traced Wesley's course until that Christmas Eve, in 1739, when he met a small company of earnest people whose supreme desire was to know how they might be saved from their sins.' I have been so much encouraged by the reception accorded to my book that I have been made bold to attempt a still more formidable task. I hope to be able to describe the work of Wesley down to the time of his death. In this volume I watch him as he lays the foundations of the Methodist Church. They were so carefully and securely laid that, up to the present time, they have determined the character of the building erected on them. Excerpt from Wesley and Methodism What has been attempted in the present work? Certainly, not a full and particular biography of John Wesley. He, it is true, is the central figure, and it is hoped that sufficient heed has been given to his personal actions and qualities to ensure a distinct, a recognisable, and - ii only it might be vivid portrait of that king of men. But a full and particular biography would call for more pages than go to compose the entire work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Times and the Teaching of John Wesley The great central sweep of his life-current was intelligently, sincerely, loyally anglo-catholic. This, I venture to think, will be found to be not only asserted, but proved, in this little book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Timeless Teachings of John Wesley for the Modern-Day Christian John Wesley’s Teachings is the first systematic exposition of John Wesley's theology that encompasses all of his writings. Wesley was a prolific writer and commentator on Scripture—his collected works fill twenty-four volumes—and yet it is commonly held that he was not systematic or consistent in his theology and teachings. On the contrary, Thomas C. Oden demonstrates that Wesley displayed a remarkable degree of internal consistency over sixty years of preaching and ministry. This series of four volumes is a text-by-text guide to John Wesley’s teaching. It introduces Wesley’s thought on the basic tenets of Christian teaching: God and providence (volume 1), Christ and salvation (volume 2), the practice of pastoral care (volume 3), and issues of ethics and society (volume 4). In everyday modern English, Oden clarifies Wesley’s explicit intent and communicates his meaning clearly to a contemporary audience. Both lay and professional readers will find this series useful for devotional reading, moral reflection, sermon preparation, and for referencing Wesley’s opinions on ecological recovery, moral relativism, enthusiasm, catholicity, experience, paradise, final justification, providence, and countless others.
