An in-depth study of the work of German-born industrial designer Richard Sapper, most famous for designs such as the Tizio lamp and the Brionvega radio. Richard Sapper (1932-2015) a German-born designer who was based in Milan most of his working career, is considered one of the most important designers of his generation. Within his lifetime, he received numerous international design accolades, including ten prestigious Compasso d'Oro awards. Sapper developed and designed a wide variety of products, ranging from ships and cars, to computers and electronics as well as furniture and kitchen appliances. His clients included Alessi, Artemide, B&B Italia, Brionvega, FIAT, Heuer, Kartell, Knoll, IBM, Lenovo, Lorenz Milano, Magis, Molteni, Pirelli and many others. This investigation of Sapper's work, based on over forty hours of interviews with the designer Jonathan Olivares, studies his objects, the circumstances that shaped them and the resulting ideals that emerge. The inter-generational conversation explores themes that reoccur throughout Sapper's oeuvre, and which have a particular importance for a younger generation of designers and those with a desire to understand Sapper's work from a fresh perspective. An illustrated timeline, packed with images from Sapper's personal archives, reveals the incredible variety and technical brilliance of his work. Richard Sapper died in Milan on 31 December 2015. Designed by SM Associati, the agency of Marco Velardi from Apartamento magazine, the book opens with an image essay featuring candid commissioned photography by Ramak Fazel.

When spontaneous student protests erupted in Hong Kong on 28 September 2014 as a reaction to proposed changes in the electoral process, the global media was rife with images not only of the protesters themselves, but also the myriad informal structures and designs they had created. Barricades, shelter and sculptures were constructed from everyday objects, the umbrellas that coined the movement?s name were used for protection from police enforcement. The exhibition presents this act of civil disobedience through the objects that were spawned by the movement, illustrating that design not only shapes and defines products, but can function as an agent of change in politics, communication and social innovation. 00Exhibition: Vitra Design Museum, Weil, Germany (12.03.2016-29.01.2017)

This first comprehensive account of a mid-century master covers the multi-faceted career of a fine artist, graphic designer, teacher, and publisher. It reflects Norman Ives's timeless relevance in the visual arts. Constructions & Reconstructions is an overview of Norman Ives's multifaceted career. Ives was a gifted artist better known for his graphic design. His talents extended well beyond the field of design. Much of this seamless transi- tion came from Ives's mastery of form, common to both endeavors. Ives's paintings and collages are collected by major museums: The 1967 Whitney Annual exhibition of American painting, the Guggenheim Museum, Yale University Art Gallery and various others. Norman Ives holds a secure place in the history of American Mid-Century Modern canon as one of a band of artists using letterforms as art. Ives's design and art appeared to be outliers of the percolating type-as-art movement popularized by Robert Indiana's LOVE sculptures. Type-related art has since become ubiquitous in painting and sculpture, as well as other massive architectural "type works." Ives's work fits squarely into this genre having roots in the early 20th-century Modern movement. Ives's was part of a period representing a high point in the teachings of graphic design. This began with Josef Albers's restructuring of the Yale University Art School. Ives was both a student of Albers and his teaching colleague, then later, his publisher. Taking Albers's lead, this curriculum helped reformulate graphic design in its evolution from commercial art. Norman Ives was a member of AGI, along with fellow faculty members Herbert Matter, Armin Hofmann, Paul Rand, and Bradbury Thompson.) Ives's recognition in two major fields of the visual arts makes him worthy of being called master, in any period. In the history of art, there are many examples of works that rise to the level rightfully called timeless: Corinthian helmets, Heraldry, Greek sculpture, Kurt Schwitters's collages, and the work of Josef Albers. The book itself is a work of art, a comprehensive account of the spirit and genius of Norman Ives. It has been long in the making. After studying with Ives, the book's author John T. Hill then taught with Ives at Yale's School of Fine Arts. This book introduces unseen master works, showcasing the brilliant variety and vitality of the work. It fully delineates his stock in trade--letterforms--which became "his lyrical strokes, their construction and reconstruction defining his work."

The goal of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth required the development of three things: spacecraft, launch vehicles, and protective clothing. Spacesuits: Within the Collections of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum takes the reader through the development of the last category, the spacesuits used during this venture. Highlighting the pressure suits created during the years leading up to the lunar missions and beyond, this book features dramatic photographs of the Smithsonian's collection, as well as never-before-published historical images of spacesuit development and testing-range-of-motion studies, for example, in which researchers wore spacesuits while playing baseball and football. The book also includes a group of advanced spacesuits, which, though never used on a mission, are in many respects the most exciting suits ever created. One suit glove has steel fingernails and sharkskin pads, in an attempt to harness the abilities of the human hand. Spacesuits are surprisingly fragile; they are made for a short lifespan in the most extreme of conditions, and long-term survival is not part of their design process. The final chapter touches briefly on the current conditions of historic suits, how they have held up over time, the reasons for their deterioration, and the rewards and difficulties associated with caring for and preserving these very complex and iconic artifacts. From the first spacesuit designs of the 1930s through those worn on the landmark Apollo-Soyuz program of 1975, Spacesuits provides a behind-the-scenes look at the history of these remarkable creations, including some that have never before been publicly displayed.

A second volume to celebrate the master of interior design illustration. Inducted to the prestigious Interior Design Hall of Fame in 1987 Jeremiah Goodman has long been revered within the interior design community for his ability to infuse static rooms with warmth and personality. For almost seven decades his stylish and studied brushstrokes have chronicled the homes of powerbrokers in the upper reaches of the fashion and decorating worlds. Names like Bruce Weber, Carolina Herrera, Red Krakoff, and Tony Duquette populate a client list that reads like a page from Who's Who. Jeremiah: Inspired Interiors chronicles Goodman's life and work, drawing on paintings and photographs taken from his own extensive archive. More than mere illustrations, his paintings interpret and inspire, conveying how a space is experienced through the eyes of an artist. Jeremiah can evoke a brocade-upholstered chair or a Baroque mirror with a few calligraphic brushstrokes that both describe and animate. Indeed, so evocative and full of particularized information are Jeremiah's paintings that they form a unique record of the work of many of the great design personalities of the past half century. Simply put, Jeremiah's work comprises the best record of America's greatest interiors.
