Excerpt from The Journal of Microscopy and Natural Science, 1884, Vol. 3: The Journal of the Postal Microscopical Society Work of an exclusively original nature scarcely comes within our scope, and is perhaps better fitted to find publicity in the records of our learned societies; and from the majority Of our members such work is perhaps scarcely to be expected. We find, accordingly, that a considerable proportion Of the Notes in our N ote-books are evidently intended by the writers for the informa tion of their fellow workers, who may not, perhaps, have the time or opportunity to look up works of reference for themselves. Far be it from me to deprecate a practice from which I have myself so frequently derived pleasure and instruction, or to do Otherwise than recognise, that by this means the Objects of the Society are largely fulfilled. Still, I think that where adequate study has been made of the subject, there will always occur, as indeed there frequently do occur, observations of an original nature not necessarily Of scientific value, but such as must greatly increase the interest with which the communications are likely to be read, something beyond what we may expect to find even in the best books of reference; such observations, I may add, make the subject in some sense the author's own. While gladly recognising the extent to which these attributes are found in the work Of many of our members, and the excellence of the illustrations with which they are frequently adorned, I take this opportunity of indicating one direction in which I venture to think improvement is still possible. I have drawn up and annexed a classified list of the various subjects treated of in the N ote-books, and shall content myself here with mentioning a few which seem specially worthy of notice. Excerpt from The Journal of Microscopy and Natural Science, Vol. 5: The Journal of the Postal Microscopical Society The antenna of beetles are of very various forms, and are in a great many cases the basis of classification, as the Lamellicornia, Clavicornia, Longicornia, and so on. I must not say anything about them in the present paper, but will only remark that nor mally the antenna have eleven joints, although to this rule there are exceptions, some having more and others less. Excerpt from The Journal of Microscopy and Natural Science, Vol. 14: The Journal of the Postal Microscopical Society On glancing through the volume, we cannot but feel a just pride in the variety and general excellence of the many papers and articles it contains. Amongst the important contribu tions, the continuation of the translation of Dr. F. Vicentini's memoir on the Bacteria of the Sputa and Cryptogamic Flora of the Mouth, which is completed in the present part (october), deserves especial mention. Indeed, so well has this memoir been received, that we intend to offer it shortly in book form a preface to the work has been written by Prof. W. D. Miller of Berlin, and Dr. Vicentini has appended a bibliography and other important additions. The continuation of Mr. H. C. Vine's valuable papers on the Predacious and Parasitic Enemies of Aphides has been of great interest, and our best thanks are due to Mr. Vine for his contributions. Our thanks are also due to Mr. C. D. Soar for his papers on the British Hydrachnidae, to Mr. W. Thomson for his papers on The In uence of Light on Life, and On the Study of the Micro Fungi, to our past-president, Mr. G. H. Bryan, for his lucid article on Benham's Artificial Spectrum Top, ' to Mr. C. J. Watkins for his interesting contribution on The Denizens of an Old Cherry Tree, to Prof. V. A. Latham for the valuable account of the Methods and Formulae used in Examin ing Blood. The Presidential Addresses of Dr. H. L. Browne, Dr. J. Hall, the Rev. E. T. Stubbs, and Dr. J. S. Turner also deserve mention. Lastly, we must offer our best thanks for the' kind assistance we have received from so many of our Subscribers. Excerpt from The Journal of Microscopy and Natural Science, 1889, Vol. 8: The Journal of the Postal Microscopical Society I think we may fairly congratulate ourselves upon the marked improvement in the character of our boxes resulting from the alteration of the Rules, whereby each member is called upon to contribute from six to twelve slides simultaneously, together with accompanying notes, for instead of a heterogeneous collection of unconnected slides as heretofore, we have now, for the most part, connected series bearing upon one and the same subject, which thus receives a much fuller elucidation than was otherwise possible, and is more calculated to elicit notes of greater value. As regards these, however, there still seems to be much to be desired, for while according a full meed Of praise to the excellent notes and admirable drawings that accompany a number of the boxes, there are frequently others with which they are of a very meagre and insufficient character, or sometimes entirely omitted, such boxes making the round of the various circuits without either giving or acquiring much information that is of any value - for the three evenings allowed to each member for the examination of the slides and the addition of notes must necessarily be very insuffi cient, Where members like myself have their time usually fully occupied. It may, then, be worth while to consider whether this state Of things may not be in some measure obviated. Having had occasion to visit Bath (the headquarters of our Society) at the commencement of the present year, I took the opportunity to suggest to our excellent Secretary what appeared to me as likely to lead to a considerable improvement in this respect, viz., the formation of what may be called Correspondence Circles amongst our various members, whereby such as are working at the same or allied subjects Should be brought into communication with each other, irrespective of the ordinary circu lation of slides as at present existing. The work of each member should be submitted to the other members of their special circle for comment and friendly criticism, and by judicious questions and replies a much larger amount Of valuable information would be elicited than seems to be at present practicable.
