Examining a wide range of texts and techniques, including the use of Google searches to create poetry, the appropriation of courtroom testimony, and the possibility of robo-poetics, Goldsmith joins this recent work to practices that date back to the early twentieth century. Originally commissioned by the Whitney Museum of American Art as a collaboration with vocalist Theo Bleckmann, FIDGET attempts to reduce the body to a catalog of mechanical movements by a strict art of observation. The stress of this rigorous exercise creates a condition of shifting reference points and multiple levels of observation that inevitably undermines the author's objective approach, and the trajectory of the work begins to change. Kenneth Goldsmith is also a visual poet and music critic.
