Excerpt from Key to Murphy's New Outline and Military Map of the United States: Comprising the Descriptive Geography of Every State and Territory in the Union The plan of teaching is optional with the instructor. There are three methods in common use, viz: the Point ing-out Method, the Singing Method, and the Map Method. 1. With reference to the former, the teacher Should be provided with several good pointers, five or six feet in length, -begin on the east side Of the map, and locate all the States and Territories, with their capitals, one west of the other, to the Pacific Ocean. As soon as the names and locations of the states and territories are learned, begin with the New England Section, and take up the geography of each State. It is a good plan, after the pupils have become familiar with the map, in order to secure their attention and interest, to allow them to call upon each other, to point out and locate such places as they may designate.
