"Kevin is a 10-year-old boy with an active imagination who has returned to the hospital for chemotherapy to treat his leukemia. Kevin is convinced that leukemia doesn't actually exist but is rather a plot by the "Powers That Be" to control all children. Melissa is a mature 10-year-old girl who also is a chemotherapy patient. She very meticulously takes all medicines, studies all the available information, and follows all of the doctor's advice. When Kevin and Melissa meet, Kevin tries to convince Melissa that the doctors are the evil "Powers That Be." Melissa is skeptical, but Kevin encourages her to use her imagination and join him on his quest to discover who is behind the plot. In a series of adventures: Kevin's imagination first transforms a pharmacy into the evil laboratory of Dr. StrangeGlove; Kevin believes that the "strange language" of medical terms the doctor and nurse use prove they are aliens; Kevin and Melissa explore a distant planet where the aliens are using children as guinea pigs for testing cosmetics; they imagine the nurse and doctor as vampires planning to suck all their blood. When Melissa tries to convince him that the doctors want to help, Kevin refuses to listen. Melissa then gets her test results showing she is still in remission. Kevin, though, has discovered that his cancer has come back. He is very upset and is now sure that the cancer is a government plot. Melissa persuades the doctor and nurse to join Kevin's fantasy and convince Kevin that they are secret agents fighting for him, not against him. By the end of the play, Kevin allows the doctors to help him in his fight against his true enemy: the cancer. King Chemo has toured extensively and was the Omaha Theatre Company for Young People's high-school interns' project in partnership with the Children's Hospital and the Nebraska Leukemia & Lymphoma Society."--Publisher's website.

Written with clarity and grace, this memoir of an adolescent boy’s four-year struggle with leukemia, his untimely death at sixteen, and the aftermath is presented from three perspectives. Using journals and recollection, Noe’s father Phil Wolfson recalls the events chronologically. His son’s chemotherapy journal offers a stricken teenager’s private view of illness, his wrestling with such enormous stress while striving to live within the framework of “normal” expectations for adolescence. The third perspective derives from the author’s realization that his intimate relationship with Noe continues after death. Channeling his son’s spirit, the author writes in his place, sharing with readers a near-adult view of living with illness and losing the battle to survive it. Noe reveals the inner world of familial love and discord, Noe’s own remarkable coping, and the extraordinary stress Noe’s illness had on his younger brother. It describes the quest for emotional and spiritual support through therapy, contact with renowned alternative healers, and the use of the drug MDMA for enhancing relationships. With poignant descriptions of an assisted dying process, Noe moves beyond a model of bereavement to offer a reminder of love’s transcendence. From the Trade Paperback edition.

All the King’s Horses By: Maureen Doyle with Barbara van den Akker An autobiography, All the King’s Horses intersperses Biblical stories with events in Maureen’s life. Early on tragedy and trauma led to a life that made Mary Magdelene look saintly; but neither Mary nor Maureen could resist the dramatic outpouring of God’s love. For Maureen it happened under a tent, on the ground, on the tiny island of Bermuda. Revealing of deep hidden scars that caused an emotional prison via daily life with her teenage grandchildren through their antics and her cooperation with the Holy Spirit that came the healing that set her free. Hoping to show others they are never alone, All the King’s Horses tells a true story in a way that shows that God is real. His abundant love is for all people.
