Las Cartas a un amigo despliegan un ritual iniciatorio que empieza por afrontar la pérdida de a madre del autor y terminan por un episodio de fascinación ante una mujer virtuosa. Echeverría relata estos sucesos en unas epístolas que prefiguran el estilo exaltado de su obra La cautiva.
