This volume is the third in the series devoted to Antibiotics initiated by Springer Verlag in 1967. The first two volumes were devoted to the Mode of Action of Antibiotics and Biogenesis, respectively and were received graciously. During the intervening years these two works have been used often by research workers and students alike and have been quoted extensively. Although a number of other excellent treatises on antibiotics have appeared, the Springer series has set a standard for thoroughness and quality that meets the need of the scientific community. It is against this background that the present Editors set about the preparation of a third volume in the Series on Antibiotics. Since the appearance of Volume I, also dealing with Mechanism of Action, tremendous strides have been made in the depth and breadth of our knowledge of molecular biology, microbial chemistry and molecular pharmacology and of their direct application to studies on the mode of action of drugs. The field of molecular biology itself was in its relative infancy during the preceding decade and the unique role played by many anti biotics in the development of our understanding of nucleic acid synthesis and function and its relationship to protein synthesis and cell physiology has led rapidly to a very precise, understanding of how many of these same antibiotics inhibit susceptible cells.

The Eleventh International Latin American Symposium is an important mile stone reflecting the rapid development of basic biochemistry in Latin America. The topic "Gene Expression and Its Regulation" was received enthusiastically, and, thanks to the vision of our Argentine colleagues, the program developed rapidly under the leadership of Dr. Gabriel Favelukes as General Secretary of the Symposium. It is interesting to note the tremendous progress that has been made in basic and applied sciences in Latin America over the past few years. The increasing initiative and leadership being demonstrated by our Latin American colleagues in organizing these symposia is a most satisfying development that speaks well for the future of science in Latin America. The early publication of this symposium has been made possible through the efforts of an editorial board consisting of Dr. F. T. Kenney (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), Dr. Gabriel Favelukes (University of La Plata), Dr. Barbara Ham kalo (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), and Dr. J. T. August (Albert Einstein College of Medicine). As in previous symposia, excellent support has come from the Ford Founda tion through a grant to the National Academy of Sciences, the United States Atomic Energy Commission, the National Science Foundation, OAS, and other groups. Through the cooperation of the authorities at the University of La Plata, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (the United States cosponsoring university), and other schools, this very successful symposium was made possible.

Nitrogen in the Environment, Volume 2: Soil-Plant-Nitrogen Relationships is the second of a two-volume treatise based on manuscripts presented at the international conference on ""Nitrogen in the Environment,"" held at the University of California Conference Center, Lake Arrowhead, in February, 1977. All original manuscripts were revised in accordance with discussions at the conference. The chapters published in these volumes are those revised manuscripts, with provisions in each chapter to preserve the major suggestions for their improvement. These two volumes—Nitrogen Behavior in Field Soil and Soil-Plant-Nitrogen Relationships—should be of value in bringing into perspective current knowledge on selected aspects of nitrogen in the environment. The book contains 22 chapters and opens with a study on the factors influencing nitrate acquisition by plants; assimilation and fate of reduced nitrogen. Separate chapters follow on topics such as absorption and utilization of ammonium nitrogen by plants; potential nitrate levels in edible plant parts; control of biological nitrogen fixation; and methods for analysis of denitrification in soils.
