Excerpt from Popular Lectures on the Books of the New Testament Tms book, with the exception of the eighth chapter, is a stenographic report of lectures delivered to a large Sunday-school class, which at times numbered as many as three hundred. This fact will explain the familiar and even colloquial style of address. While the problems of history and exegesis were discussed, the lectures were intended to be popular, in the sense of being intelligible to all. It is hoped that this has not prevented them from being fairly representative of the results of modern scholarship. They are now printed in the belief that they may be useful to a larger number of Christian people than that which first lis tened to them. A. H. S. Excerpt from Keynote Studies in Keynote Books of the Bible In nineteen hundred and eleven Mr. James Sprunt of Wilmington, North Carolina, gave to the Trustees of Union Theological Seminary in Virginia the sum of thirty thousand dollars, for the purpose of establishing a perpetual lectureship, which would enable the institution to secure from time to time the services of distinguished ministers and authoritative scholars, outside the regular Faculty, as special lecturers on subjects connected with various departments of Christian thought and Christian work. The lecturers are chosen by the Faculty of the Seminary and a committee of the Board of Trustees, and the lectures are published after their delivery in accordance with a contract between the lecturer and these representatives of the institution. The sixth series of lectures on this foundation is presented in this volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Change of Attitude Toward the Bible: A Lecture Given Under the Auspices of the American HE body of the present publication is taken from an essay prepared for a select clerical circle in June, 1889. In response to an invitation from the management of the American Insti tute of Sacred Literature, it was trans formed into a lecture, and, by request of the local Board in Boston, was delivered last month as one in a series of weekly addresses by different clergymen which is still in progress in the hall of the Young Men's Christian Association. The ad verse criticisms which it elicited on this occasion were so sharp, and appeared in so many religious journals East and West, that justice to all seemed to require that it should be printed exactly as it was spoken. Excerpt from The Old Testament in the Jewish Church: A Course of Lectures on Biblical Criticism IN republishing these Lectures, eleven years after their first appearance, I have had to consider what to emend, what to omit, and what to add. First, then, a careful revision of the whole volume has enabled me to correct a certain number of errors, and to make many statements more precise. In the second place, I have pruned away some redundancies more proper to oral delivery than to a printed book; and I have also removed from the Notes and Illustrations some things which seemed to be superfluous. As I was resolved to make no change on the general plan of the book, I at first hoped that these omissions would give me space for all necessary additions for though much good work has been done within the last decade on special problems of Old Testament Criticism, there are not many points where these special researches affect the general arguments and broad results which I desired to set forth. But on mature consideration I came to see that in one direction the book might be profitably enlarged without a fundamental change of plan; it was desirable to give a fuller account of what the critics have to say about the narra tive of the Old Testament Books. I have, therefore, made large additions to the part of Lecture V. That treats of the historical books, and, in consequence, have thrown the whole discussion of the Canon into Lecture VI. To the narrative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Virgin Birth of Christ: Being Lectures Delivered Under the Auspices of the Bible Teachers' Training School, New York, April, 1907 These lectures were delivered during the month of April, 1907, in the Chapel of the Fifth Avenue Presby terian Church, New York, under the auspices of the Bible Teachers' Training School of that city, and they are now published, practically as prepared for delivery, under the same auspices. The author regrets that their revision for the press had to be undertaken at a distance from facilities for checking quotations and references in his pages; but he trusts that these, if not so copious as he could wish, will be found generally correct. The papers summarised in the Appendix came into the au thor's hands in New York after his own work was com pleted, and he has made no use of them in the text.
